  • In 1995 I wrote a personal statement about my motivation to teach and write about thesis writing. The urge to write this book originated in my own experiences as a student in Scotland, Germany and the USA: As a graduate of a Scottish university I made a deliberate choice to enter a PhD programme in what is often disparagingly referred to as ‘the American system’, as if there were only one system in the USA.

  • This book is about the hidden, elusive motivations that cause capable employees to start questioning their decision to join your company, start thinking of leaving, eventually disengage, and finally, leave. The true root causes of voluntary employee turnover are hiding in plain sight. If we really think about it, we already know what they are: lack of recognition (including low pay), unfulfilling jobs, limited career advancement, poor management practices, untrustworthy leadership, and dysfunctional work cultures....

  • authorize the regulation of security measures that are not associated with the immediate food-processing environment, such as requiring fences, alarms, and outside lighting. Neither agency believes that it has the authority to regulate all aspects of security at food-processing facilities. Both FDA and USDA issued voluntary security guidelines to help food processors identify measures to prevent or mitigate the risk of deliberate contamination. Because these guidelines are voluntary, neither agency enforces, monitors, or documents their implementation.

  • Contrast in component cost for different processing routes. not only design considerations relevant to the respective processes, but quite purposefully, an overview of the functional characteristics of each process, so that a greater overall understanding may be achieved. Within the standard format, a similar level of detail is provided on each of the processes included. The format is very deliberate. Firstly, an outline of the process itself – how it works and under what conditions it functions best. ...

  • However, at acquisition an entity is not precluded from classifying as trading a security it plans to hold for a longer period. If an entity acquires a security without the intent to sell it in the near term, it may still classify the security in the trading category. The FASB deliberately used the terms generally and principally in describing the trading category.

  • In this paper, we present an automated, quantitative, knowledge-poor method to evaluate the randomness of a collection of documents (corpus), with respect to a number of biased partitions. The method is based on the comparison of the word frequency distribution of the target corpus to word frequency distributions from corpora built in deliberately biased ways. We apply the method to the task of building a corpus via queries to Google.

  • MorP is a system for automatic word class assignment on the basis of surface features. It has a very small lexicon of form words (%o entries), and for the rest works entirely on morphological and configurational patterns. This makes it robust and fast, and in spite of the (deliberate) restrictedness of the system, its performance reaches an average accuracy level above 91% when run on unrestricted Swedish text. K e y w o r d s : parsing, morphology. The development of the parser to be presented has been supported by the Swedish Research Council for the Humanities. ...

  • Steels are alloys of iron with generally less than 1% carbon plus a wide range of other elements. Some of these elements are added deliberately to impart special properties and others are impurities not completely removed (sometimes deliberately) during the steel making process. Elements may be present in solid solution or combined as intermetallic compounds with iron, carbon or other elements. Some elements, namely carbon, nitrogen, boron and hydrogen, form interstitial solutions with iron whereas others such as manganese and silicon form substitutional solutions. Beyond......

  • Writing Skills Abstract Advanced writing skills are an important aspect of academic performance as well as subsequent work-related performance. However, American students rarely attain advanced scores on assessments of writing skills (National Assessment of Educational Progress, 2002). In order to achieve higher levels of writing performance, the working memory demands of writing processes should be reduced so that executive attention is free to coordinate interactions among them.

  • The American Marketing Association (AMA) seems to be the self appointed arbiter of the definition of marketing. Certainly in Australia and New Zealand, American texts and definitions dominate study of the discipline in academia. Currently the AMA defines marketing as, "The process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion and distribution of ideas goods and services to create exchange and satisfy individual and organisational objectives" (Marketing News, 1985, p.1).

  • Pharmacology can be defined as the study of substances that interact with living systems through chemical processes, especially by binding to regulatory molecules and activating or inhibiting normal body processes. These substances may be chemicals administered to achieve a beneficial therapeutic effect on some process within the patient or for their toxic effects on regulatory processes in parasites infecting the patient.

  • This original study by Claudia Kissling of the University of Bremen fits our series on non-state actors for two reasons. First, she demonstrates the working of the international policy cycle following from the framing and passing of an international treaty. In this case the implementation and monitoring facets of an international agreement are discussed by a close analysis of the 7th Review Conference of the parties to the 1968 Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which took place at the United Nations in 2005.

  • Cell-Scale Queueing dealing with the jitters In Chapter 4 we considered a situation in which a large collection of CBR voice sources all send their cells to a single buffer. We stated that it was reasonably accurate under certain circumstances (when the number of sources is large enough) to model the total cell-arrival process from all the voice sources as a Poisson process. Now a Poisson process is a single statistical model from which the detailed information about the behaviour of the individual sources has been lost, quite deliberately, in order to achieve simplicity....

  • Witasek's earliest philosophical paper is on the question of the possibility of our influencing our presentations through acts of will (1896). How, he asks, is it possible deliberately to have something given in presentation, to will that something be presented, given that the act of will is itself such as to include an act of presenttion? He deals with this problem by means of a distinction between intuitive and non-intuitive presentations, turning his attention to the processes involved in passing deliberately from the latter to the former, e.g.

  • Further, Mamede and Schmidt (2004) found that reflective practice in medicine in their study had a five-factor structure: deliberate induction, which involves the physician taking time to reflect upon an unfamiliar problem; deliberate deduction, which occurs when a physician logically deduces the consequences of a number of possible hypotheses; testing, which involves evaluating predictions against the problem being explored; openness to reflection, occurring when a physician is willing to engage in such constructive activity when faced with an unfamiliar situation; and, meta-reas...
