  • We therefore come from widely differing backgrounds: foreign ministers, finance and planning officials, policymakers in agriculture, science, and technology. Many of the Commissioners are cabinet ministers and senior economists in their own nations, concerned largely with the affairs of those countries. As Commissioners, however, we were acting not in our national roles but as individuals; and as we worked, nationalism and the artificial divides between "industrialized" and "developing", between East and West, receded.

  • Today, many marketers use specific images that are meaningful to this audience: celebrities such as entertainers, rap singers and athletes; models in fashionable dress; models using specific cultural associations expressed in language and mannerisms; youth representing peer approval; and popular music unique to a specific group of children of color. Other marketing strategies lure young consumers with routine “low” and special discounted prices for over-sized amounts of foods and beverages, such as McDonald’s Meal Deals and 7–11’s Big Gulp oversized beverages....

  • And what effect do these industrial shifts have on the employability of city residents? The transformation has favored a more educated labor force over blue-collar or entry- level workers, and it has been most pronounced in the Northeast and Midwest, which house the greatest concentration of minority groups (Moss and Tilly, 1991; Kasarda, 1985, 1989, 1990).

  • The Janus kinase–signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK–STAT) pathway is utilized by a range of cytokines (interferons, IL-2 and IL-6 amongst others) that control survival, proliferation and differentiation responses in diverse cell types. The realisation that unregulated activation of this pathway is a key driver of not only chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and psoriasis, but also many cancers has identified its components as targets for therapeutic intervention by small molecule inhibitors and biologicals.

  • The ownership of insurers and the scope of their activities may also pose market challenges. While competition is arguably limited by the presence of few players, such as in the Irish insurance system, the existence of several players is not the only measure of market competitiveness. Mobility across insurers is low in many OECD countries. It is also sometimes challenging to establish incentives for “healthy” and equitable competition among PHI insurers, as they face incentives to concentrate on good risks, thereby failing to cover more vulnerable individuals.

  • Cattle and buffalo are an integral part of the mixed crop-livestock smallholder farming systems in the developing countries of the Asia-Pacific region. Apart from being a crucial source of high quality food (meat and milk), dairy farming provides employment, sustainable income and social security to millions of smallholder farmers within the region. Also, attaining food security and self-sufficiency in livestock products is a high priority development goal of most countries in this region.

  • Ignite an empty crucible and cover in the muffle at 600 C, cool in a dessicator, and weigh to the nearest 0.1 mg. Put about 2 gram sample of air-dried bamboo in the crucible, determine the weight of crucible plus specimen, and place in the drying oven at 103±2o C with the crucible cover removed. Cool in a desiccator and weigh until the weight is constant. Place the crucible and contents in the muffle furnace and ignite until all the carbon is eliminated. Heat slowly at the start to avoid flaming and protect the crucible from strong...

  • Banks in Italy and Spain made bids for a large proportion of the funds allocated at the first three-year LTRO (Graph 3, centre panel), while the funding situation of banks in other regions improved indirectly. 2 Banks in Germany, Luxembourg and Finland, for example, did not take much additional funding at the first LTRO. However, some of the allotted funds, perhaps after a number of transactions, ended up as deposits with these banks, boosting the liquidity of their balance sheets.

  • Hydraulic fracturing, like any deep drilling operation, is subject to the risk of leaks and spills that can cause areas to be contaminated by hazardous waste. In 1980, the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) provided for the clean-up of abandoned hazardous waste and established liability to those who released the wastes to pay for clean-up [18]. Yet oil and gas exploration is exempt from clean-up of accidental spills, leaks, and problems from underground injection via the Energy Policy Act of 2005 [19].

  • I show that, just as investment bankers are key drivers of financial markets, shocks in financial markets have important and lasting effects on the careers of investment bankers. Specifically, using data from a 1996 and 1998 survey of several thousand Stanford MBAs, I find that stock market conditions while MBA students are in school have a large effect on whether they go directly into investment banking upon graduation. This effect of themarkets on initialMBA placement turns out to be a lasting determinant of career choice and earnings....

  • Writing development, then, is not complete at the end of university or even post- graduate work. An individual who writes on the job as a professional, even if it is but a part of his or her work, is preoccupied with what the text says in relation to what the writer already knows. Scientific writers, for example, must know “what problems the discipline has addressed, what the discipline has learned, where it is going, who the major actors are, and how all these things contribute” to the writer’s own project (Bazerman, 1988).

  • Grasslands occur on every continent except Antarctica, and constitute about 34 percent of the global terrestrial carbon stock. Changes in grassland vegetation due to overgrazing, conversion to crop land, desertification, fire, fragmentation, and introduction of non‐native species affect their carbon storage capacity, and may in some cases even lead to grasslands becoming a net source of CO2. For example, they may lose 20 to 50 percent of their soil organic carbon content through cultivation, soil erosion, and land degradation.

  • In just over a third of the firms visited we found there were inadequate systems and controls in place around the sales process. Inadequate systems and controls of this sort indicate that the firm and the senior management have not given appropriate priority to compliance with regulatory obligations that were designed to provide positive outcomes for consumers. Just under two thirds of firms visited could not demonstrate they had taken sufficient steps to ensure their sales processes meet the required standards.

  • Panelists from the Center for the Evaluation of Risks to Human Reproduction reviewed the literature for potential toxicities of HU. They concluded that HU does not cause a growth delay in children 5-15 years old . There were no data on the effects on subsequent generations following exposure of developing germ cells to HU in utero. Some evidence supported impaired spermatogenesis with use of HU. Although we identified six patients taking HU who developed leukemia, the evidence did not support causality.

Many organic chemicals are known to have potential human health impacts and drinking-water quality standard listings developed.

Parties contracting with the firm desire information both about the firm’s ability to satisfy the terms of contracts and the firm’s ultimate compliance with its contractual obligations. Financial accounting information supplies a key quantitative representation of individual corporations that supports a wide range of contractual relationships.

  • It makes sense that annuities would be widely used by workers as a way to replace the guaranteed lifetime income security that once was provided by pensions. But annuities are not as well understood, not as popular, and not as competitively priced, given the increased need for them, as one would hope. Life insurance is, in a sense, the opposite of an annuity. The purchaser of an annuity bets that he or she will live a long time. The purchaser of life insurance bets that he or she will die soon.
