  • It is necessary to have a (large) annotated corpus to build a statistical parser. Acquisition of such a corpus is costly and time-consuming. This paper presents a method to reduce this demand using active learning, which selects what samples to annotate, instead of annotating blindly the whole training corpus. Sample selection for annotation is based upon “representativeness” and “usefulness”. A model-based distance is proposed to measure the difference of two sentences and their most likely parse trees.

Blood slides were stained with Giemsa stain that was prepared by the laboratory in advance of the field work. Parasite densities were calculated by counting the number of asexual stage parasites/200 white blood cells (WBCs), assuming 6000 WBCs/dl of blood. Blood smears were considered negative if no parasites were found after counting 200 fields.   • We studied theoretically and experimentally the transformation, attenuation, and setup due to shoaling and breaking of internal waves in a two-layer fluid system on a uniform slope. An image processing technique was used to illustrate 2D instantaneous displacements of density interface. These results were compared with the calculated values by using the method of characteristics, the simple shoaling model with energy dissipation, and the momentum balance equation based on a radiation stress concept.
