A stemming algorithm, a procedure to reduce all words with the same stem to a common form, is useful in many areas of computational linguistics and information-retrieval work. While the form of the algorithm varies with its application, certain linguistic problems are common to any stemming procedure.

In June 2006, seventeen scientists and educators selected by the National

of France held a workshop at the estate of the Fondation des Treilles in
France, to discuss issues concerning the role of science in the development
of modern societies. This location was an idyllic setting for relaxed conversations,
while simplifying travel and visa arrangements for the participants.
Considering the problems we have in communicating with other h~rmans using natural language, it is not clear that we want to recreate these problems in dealing with the computer. While there is some evidence that natural language is useful in communications among humans, there is also considerable evidence that it is neither perfect nor ideal. Natural language is wordy (redundant) and imprecise. Most b,*m,m groups who have a need to communicate quickly and accurately tend to develop a rather well specified subset of natural language that is highly coded and precise in nature.
