  • Isolated blunt abdominal trauma (BAT) represents about 5% of annual trauma mortality from blunt trauma. As part of multiple-site injury (polytrauma), BAT contributes another 15% of trauma mortality. In the abdominal trauma, the best exploration strategy is one that leads most quickly and reliably in the diagnosis of surgical injury. This strategy must be established based on hemodynamic status and clinical guidance but should never delay a therapeutic homeostasis.

  • Equally important, negotiators should focus early on obtaining a North Korean commitment that it will halt illicit procurements from abroad for its nuclear programs and end the proliferation of its nuclear technology. The latter is especially important for negotiations to establish in a verifiable manner. While waiting for negotiations to bear fruit, the United States and its allies will face two interconnected challenges. They must slow down North Korea’s centrifuge program, or at least make progress more costly and visible to the international community.

  • Peripheral cyanosis is common in children at any age and is not important. Central cyanosis is always important but may be missed in a child with severe anaemia or children with pigmented skin. It is detected by looking at the colour of the tongue – blue colouration suggests a saturation of less than 85%. Central cyanosis is not improved by breathing 100% oxygen and its presence should be confirmed by a pulse oximeter. Long standing cyanosis may be associated with ‘clubbing’ of the nails of the hands and feet.

  • Effective communication is essential to the success of all the above categories of needs analysis. The mechanisms established need to ensure proper ‘bottom up’ communication from the local level, as it is difficult to make the voice of the SME sector heard at the national level – this is particularly so for informal and micro enterprises. Information and communication technology is now beginning to change this. For a selection of websites on SMEs and their development see also Annex 9.3. Information alone is neither knowledge nor learning.

  • Examples ranged from gory low-budget horror to the sexploitation films of Russ Meyer. Elements of independent ‘exploitation’ strategy were also embraced by Hollywood in its more mainstream, blockbuster productions, especially the strategy of combining wide opening release patterns with saturation advertising, in order to recoup costs quickly. A number of Hollywood’s biggest-grossing films of the 1970s were, in part, bigger-budget and glossier versions of independent exploitation fare, especially The Exorcist (1973) and Jaws (1975)....

Unhygienic production, poor handling and undesirable practices such as addition of water or other substances can introduce bacteria or germs that cause spoilage. The resulting wastage can make you lose profits that you would have otherwise made. Unhygienic handling may introduce disease-causing bacteria into the milk and this can also adversely affect human health.

Human hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) were obtained from β-thalassemia patients, transfected with the recombinant AAV containing β-globin gene. The transfected cells were then transplanted into Nude/SCID mice, and the long term expression of β-globin in vivo was examined. In the tenth chapter, Korecka et al. compare AAV serotypes for gene delivery to dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN)....

  • At the end of each business day, money market funds, like all other mutual funds, must calculate and publish a NAV that equals the aggregate value of all of their holdings minus any liabilities. For all funds other than money funds, this NAV reflects the market value of the securities held in the fund. But money market funds are different. If they meet certain tests, as set out in the SEC’s Rule 2a-7, they can use the amortized cost accounting method to compute their reportedNAV.

"In particular, this means using more advanced technologies and introducing stricter norms for nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulates." The agency said one reason for the smaller than anticipated decrease in polluting emissions is the projected increase in truck traffic despite the Swiss government's efforts to encourage trucks crossing through Switzerland to be put on rail cars through the use of road tolls and quotas on truck traffic.

  • Worldwide per capita consumption of alcoholic beverages in 2005 equaled 6.13 litres of pure alcohol consumed by every person aged 15 years or older. A large portion of this consumption – 28.6% or 1.76 litres per person – was homemade and illegally produced alcohol or, in other words, unrecorded alcohol. The consumption of homemade or illegally produced alcohol may be associated with an increased risk of harm because of unknown and potentially dangerous impurities or contaminants in these beverages. A large variation exists in adult per capita consumption (Figure 1).
