  • The purpose of this book is to provide both an introduction and a state-of-the-art review of the essential physics and signal processing principles of diagnostic ultrasound in a single reference volume with a unified approach. This book draws together many of the ideas from seminal papers, the author’s research, and other sources in a single narrative and point of view. Unlike texts that present only the theory of acoustic fundamentals, this book relates topics to each other in the context of ultrasound imaging and practical application.

  • The resulting product profited from further input from Mark Stern and Susan Seifert, Joan Shigekawa of the Rockefeller Foundation, and TRF staff, Patricia Smith, Margaret Berger Bradley, Ira Goldstein, Julia Serbulov and Alissa Weiss. A special thank you as well to David Bradley for his collaborative editorial contribution. Arts practitioners, developers and policy analysts who participated in a one-day convening in June 2007 also contributed greatly to our understanding of these issues. The collaboration also resulted in five briefs.

  • The validity of a specific method should be demonstrated in laboratory experiments using samples or standards that are similar to unknown samples analyzed routinely. The preparation and execution should follow a validation protocol, preferably written in a stepby- step instruction format. This proposed procedure assumes that the instrument has been selected and the method has been developed.

  • Capital flows are highly liquid, can respond abruptly to changes in economic and financial conditions, and exercise a primary influence on exchange rates and through those on global flows of goods and services. Economists generally attribute recent rise and fall in foreign investment to a number of factors, including a “safe haven” effect during times of uncertainty; comparatively favorable returns on investments relative to risk, a surplus of saving in other areas of the world, the well-developed U.S. financial system, and the overall stability of the U.S. economy.

  • Declining water quality is an acute problem around the world, particularly in developing countries where there are notable increases in agricultural and industrial production, coupled with a lack of adequate wastewater treatment. In many developing countries, waterways traditionally used for drinking water or other community needs have been heavily contaminated. In China, many rivers are so badly polluted that not even industry can use the water and nearly two-thirds of the country’s largest cities have no wastewater treatment facilities.

  • Businesses and societies can find approaches that will move towards all three goals - environmental protection, social wellbeing and economic development - at the same time. Sustainable development is good business in itself. It creates opportunities for suppliers of ‘green consumers’, developers of environmentally safer materials and processes, firms that invest in eco-efficiency, and those that engage themselves in social well-being. These enterprises will generally have a competitive advantage.

  • In our study, we aimed to determine the validity of diagnostic methods for tuberculosis. Eighty-one people suspected to have tuberculosis were included in the study. The validity of the applied methods for the diagnosis of tuberculosis tuberculin skin test (TST), sputum smear, and used in diagnostic chest X-ray findings (CXR), clinical features and history were evaluated as culture was considered the reference test. Included in the study of 81 people (54 males 27 females) mean age was determined as 45.04 ± 18.69.

  • Professional care at birth can help reduce maternal mor tality. The proportion of women who deliver with the assistance of a skilled health-care provider - doctor , nurse, midwife - is highly correlated with materna mortality ratios. Trends in this indicator during the 1990s suggest that significant progress has been made in developing countries, with an overall increase from 41% to 57% between 1990 and 2003. However , there are important differences across regions, as shown in Figure 6.

  • There is a need for development of new diagnostic tools to allow earlier detection of active disease, predict disease progression and evaluate the response to periodontal therapy, thereby improving the clinical management of patients with periodontal diseases. Advances in periodontal diseases diagnostic research are moving toward methods whereby periodontal risk can be identified and quantified by objective measures such as biomarkers.

  • Medicine is, fortunately, constantly evolving. Imaging diagnosis is no exception. Technical improvements guarantee further developments in diagnosis. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have attained a recognized value in the diagnosis of the heart, which is continuing to increase. For this reason, we have now provided a separate chapter on diagnostic imaging of the heart. We have placed sectional CT images next to MR images of the heart to facilitate classification. We have limited ourselves to scans which are presently recognized as standard.

  • DWTs are constantly used to solve and treat more and more advanced problems. The DWT algorithms were initially based on the compactly supported conjugate quadrature filters (CQFs). However, a drawback in CQFs is due to the nonlinear phase effects such as spatial dislocations in multi-scale analysis. This is avoided in biorthogonal discrete wavelet transform (BDWT) algorithms, where the scaling and wavelet filters are symmetric and linear phase. The biorthogonal filters are usually constructed by a ladder-type network called lifting scheme.
