We present a preliminary study on unsupervised preposition sense disambiguation (PSD), comparing different models and training techniques (EM, MAP-EM with L0 norm, Bayesian inference using Gibbs sampling). To our knowledge, this is the first attempt at unsupervised preposition sense disambiguation.

Traditional Supply Chain Management (SCM) aims at movement of goods and services from one end of
this chain to the other through different stages so as to improve the efficiency, productivity and profitability
of the entire process. As SCM spans across the economic functions of the entire value chain of
a product or service, it is vital for a company to join in, form, or coordinate its business related supply
chains, forming various kinds of business relationships.
This module provides students with an introduction to the Microsoft Solutions
Framework (MSF) Team Model, including the team goals for success, team
roles of the model, how to scale the model for small or large projects, principles
of a successful team, and how to apply the model to different types of projects.
This book aims to provide a concise account of the essential elements of quality control. It is
designed to be used as a text for courses on quality control for students of industrial engineering
at the advanced undergraduate, or as a reference for researchers in related fields
seeking a concise treatment of the key concepts of quality control. It is intended to give a
contemporary account of procedures used to design quality models.
Air pollution has been a major transboundary problem and a matter of global concern for decades. High concentrations of different air pollutants are particularly harmful to large cities residents, where numerous anthropogenic activities strongly influence the quality of air. Although there are many books on the subject, the one in front of you will hopefully fulfill some of the gaps in the area of air quality monitoring and modeling, and be of help to graduate students, professionals and researchers....
Information about climate1 is used to make decisions every day. From farmers deciding
which crops to plant next season to mayors in large cities deciding how to prepare for future heat
waves, and from an insurance company assessing future flood risks to a national security planner
assessing future conflict risks from the impacts of drought, users of climate information span a
vast array of sectors in both the public and private spheres. Each of these communities has
different needs for climate data, with different time horizons (see Box 1) and different tolerances
This Second Edition of the go-to reference combines the classical analysis and modern applications of applied mathematics for chemical engineers. The book introduces traditional techniques for solving ordinary differential equations (ODEs), adding new material on approximate solution methods such as perturbation techniques and elementary numerical solutions. It also includes analytical methods to deal with important classes of finite-difference equations. The last half discusses numerical solution techniques and partial differential equations (PDEs). The read...
TWO ESSAYS IN INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS: AN EMPIRICAL APPROACH TO PURCHASING POWER PARITY AND THE MONETARY MODEL OF EXCHANGE RATE DETERMINATION I adopt a different strategy: I compare housing markets that differ in the strength of
the residential location-school assignment link, and I develop simple reduced-form
implications of parental valuations for the across-school distribution of student
characteristics and educational outcomes as a function of the strength of this link.
This paper explores techniques to take advantage of the fundamental difference in structure between hidden Markov models (HMM) and hierarchical hidden Markov models (HHMM). The HHMM structure allows repeated parts of the model to be merged together. A merged model takes advantage of the recurring patterns within the hierarchy, and the clusters that exist in some sequences of observations, in order to increase the extraction accuracy.
[ Team LiB ] 7.2 Procedural Assignments Procedural assignments update values of reg, integer, real, or time variables. The value placed on a variable will remain unchanged until another procedural assignment updates the variable with a different value.
For instance, based on the pure management fee model
described above, a fund with a 1.5% management fee and
fixed expenses of $600,000 would break even at $40 mil-
lion in AUM. By decreasing fixed expenses by $60,000, or
10%, the fund’s breakeven AUM drops by $4 million to $36 million. Stated differently, $15,000 in fixed
expenses equates to $1 million in AUM.
This note presents the simplest overlapping generations model. The model is due
to Diamond (1965), who built on earlier work by Samuelson (1958).
Overlapping generations models capture the fact that individuals do not live
forever, but die at some point and thus have finite life-cycles. Overlapping generations
models are especially useful for analysing the macro-economic effects of
different pension systems.
We present a syntax-based statistical translation model. Our model transforms a source-language parse tree into a target-language string by applying stochastic operations at each node. These operations capture linguistic differences such as word order and case marking. Model parameters are estimated in polynomial time using an EM algorithm. The model produces word alignments that are better than those produced by IBM Model 5. is conditioned only on word classes and positions in the string, and the duplication and translation are conditioned only on the word identity. ...
We present a statistical model of Japanese unknown words consisting of a set of length and spelling models classified by the character types that constitute a word. The point is quite simple: different character sets should be treated differently and the changes between character types are very important because Japanese script has both ideograms like Chinese (kanji) and phonograms like English (katakana). Both word segmentation accuracy and part of speech tagging accuracy are improved by the proposed model. ...
Unstructured modelling growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus
as a function of the temperature: We present modelling software developed under MATLAB in which parameter estimations are obtained by using non-linear regression techniques. The different parameters appear in a set of non-linear algebraic and differential equations representing the model of the process. From experimental data obtained in discontinuous cultures a representative mathematical model (unstructured kinetic model) of the macroscopic behaviour of Lactobacillus acidophilus has been developed.
The fundamental objects that we deal with in calculus are
functions. This chapter prepares the way for calculus by
discussing the basic ideas concerning functions, their
graphs, and ways of transforming and combining them.
We stress that a function can be represented in different
ways: by an equation, in a table, by a graph, or in words.
This book is about how to construct and use computational models of specific
parts of the nervous system, such as a neuron, a part of a neuron or a
network of neurons. It is designed to be read by people from a wide range of
backgrounds from the biological, physical and computational sciences. The
word ‘model’ can mean different things in different disciplines, and even researchers
in the same field may disagree on the nuances of its meaning.
NCAP test is conducted at 56 km/h (35 mi/h), rather than 48 km/h (30 mi/h) as required by
FMVSS No. 208. Model year (MY) 1979 vehicles were the first tested and rated using this
protocol. For several years, the agency provided consumers with the values recorded during
frontal impact tests by the anthropomorphic test devices and the relationship of those values to
established injury assessment references.
