  • This thesis describes the development, implementation and preliminary results of the Arginine and Vitamin D Adjunctive Therapy in Pulmonary Tuberculosis (AVDAPT) randomised controlled trial. I had a central role in developing and implementing the study protocol collaboratively with my PhD supervisors Associate Professor Paul Kelly (Australian National University, Canberra) and Professor Nicholas Anstey (Menzies School of Health Research, Darwin), and with additional input from the investigators listed in Appendix 1.

  • Under current policy, Medicare reimburses for physician services according to a fee schedule that differentiates payment levels for physicians according to their experience. However, experience salaried physicians who have not previously billed for Medicare services are reimbursed as "new" physicians when they first begin treating those covered by Medicare.

  • and gait is mostly derived from studies that measured and reported EF as a composite score [12,18,19]. Relatively few studies have focused on the age-related deficits in specific components of executive function and most of these studies were based on a traditional set of tests of executive function, without detailing specific components. The conclusions drawn from these studies might, therefore, be limited by their methodologies. The putative executive measures might not load on a single executive construct, and might overlap with each other [20,21].

  • Presence of epigenetic marks enables cells with the same genotype have potential to display different phenotypes and differentiate into many cell-types with different functions, and responses to environmental and intercellular signaling. For example, DNA methylation is essential for the process of imprinting. Imprinted genes are expressed from only one parental allele. This mono-allelic gene expression is directed by epigenetic marks established in the mammalian germ line and a single mutation, either genetic or epigenetic, can cause disease.

  • Although at that point, the challenges of a potential Pandemic Influenza were not being considered, this risk is now also being addressed by the training. Avian Influenza has continued its march across Europe and remains a serious threat (Revill 2007; Shaikh 2007). In this survey, 91% of senior living (SL) and long term care (LTC) administrators felt ill-prepared to deal with public health emergencies and BT threats. Eighty percent of the respondents reported that their LTC communities did not have any training (either educational or exercise based) for their workforce in this area.

  • Since its inception in 1999, The World Life Sciences Forum BioVision has played a vital role in promoting the sustainable development of Life Sciences on an international level, ensuring that they remain beneficial to humankind and the environment, and committed to ethics. BioVision has established itself as a platform for dialogue and debate by engaging top stakeholders and policy makers from Science, Society and Industry in discussions of what science can do, what society is willing to accept, and what industry can produce, all within a sound ethical framework.

  • The level of basic services accessible to Mexican households has improved strongly in past decades. According to the 12th population census of 2000, water is available now in 89.7% of all households (up from 79.4% in 1990) and power reaches 95.4% of all households (up from 87.5% in 1990). For exporters of high quality consumer products, the penetration of more sophisticated products and/or services is more relevant: Tables 7 and 8 give an overview of recent data, including further refinements according to the socio-economic level and the region of residence respectively.

  • In this paper, we assess whether boosting minority car-ownership rates would narrow inter-racial employment rate differentials. We pursue two empirical strategies. First, we explore whether the effect of auto ownership on the probability of being employed is greater for more segregated groups of workers. Exploiting the fact that African-Americans are considerably more segregated from whites than are Latinos, we estimate car-employment effects for blacks, Latinos, and whites and test whether these effects are largest for more segregated groups.

  • Fama (1977) and Miller (1977) predict that one minus the corporate tax rate will equate aftertax yields from comparable taxable and taxexempt bonds. Empirical evidence shows that long-term tax-exempt yields are higher than theory predicts. Two popular explanations for this empirical puzzle are that, relative to taxable bonds, municipal bonds bear more default risk and include costly call options. I study U.S. government secured municipal bond yields which are effectively default-free and noncallable. These municipal yields display the same tendency to be too high.

  • Research should focus on the development and production of new high-affinity, non-immunoglobulin protein scaffolds as an alternative to antibodies or oligonucleotides. Projects should aim at developing new, efficient and safe therapies by combining high specificity with stable production characteristics. Projects should include preclinical studies, methods for scale-up and GMP as appropriate, should combine academic, clinical and industrial expertise and implement a translational approach towards clinical trials (clinical proof-of-concept and/or phase I/II clinical studies).

  • Strategies for Stem Cell Replacement Stem cell transplantation is not a new concept and it is already part of established medical practice. Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) (Chap. 68) are responsible for the long-term repopulation of all blood elements in bone marrow transplant recipients. HSC transplantation is now the gold standard against which other stem cell transplantation therapies will be measured. Transplantation of differentiated cells is also a clinical reality, as donated organs (e.g., liver, kidney) and tissues (i.e.

In fact, the potential for stem cell regeneration of damaged organs and tissues is virtually limitless. However, numerous obstacles must be overcome before stem cell therapies can become a widespread clinical reality.

  • Human embryonic stem cell (hESC) lines, like those from other species, are pluripotent cell lines derived from the inner cell mass (ICM) of the developing embryo. Due to their exceptional capability of proliferating indefi nitely as undifferentiated cells when cultured in appropriate conditions, and of sustaining a normal karyotype, hESCs may have broad applications for industrial uses; clinical purposes, namely, cell-based therapy; and research of early human development, differentiation mechanisms, and lineage commitment.

  • Patients with stage I disease, no residual tumor, and well or moderately differentiated tumors need no adjuvant therapy after definitive surgery, and 5-year survival exceeds 95%. For all other patients with early disease and those stage I patients with poor prognosis histologic grade, adjuvant platinum-based therapy is warranted. Large prospective randomized trials have demonstrated that adjuvant therapy improves disease-free and overall survival by 8% (82% vs. 74%, p = .008).
