In this chapter, you will explore foreign direct investment. You will also: Learn about worldwide patterns of foreign direct investment flows and the theories that attempt to explain them; understand important management issues in the foreign direct investment decision; and examine why governments intervene in the flow of foreign direct investment and the methods they use.
The Internet Explorer 10 modern experience works on both touch devices and non-touch devices, and uses the full screen by default to display websites. In Internet Explorer 10, websites participate in Windows 8 features, including the Start screen, charms, and Snap.
Using the Navigation Bar
The navigation bar for Internet Explorer 10 looks different than earlier versions of Internet Explorer. The navigation bar is located at the bottom of the screen instead of the top, and includes the following controls:...
This paper describes a method of interactively visualizing and directing the process of translating a sentence. The method allows a user to explore a model of syntax-based statistical machine translation (MT), to understand the model’s strengths and weaknesses, and to compare it to other MT systems. Using this visualization method, we can find and address conceptual and practical problems in an MT system. In our demonstration at ACL, new users of our tool will drive a syntaxbased decoder for themselves.
This chapter define the general role a router plays in networks, describe the directly connected networks, different router interfaces, examine directly connected networks in the routing table and use the CDP protocol, describe static routes with exit interfaces,... Inviting you to refer.
We show for both English POS tagging and Chinese word segmentation that with proper representation, large number of deterministic constraints can be learned from training examples, and these are useful in constraining probabilistic inference. For tagging, learned constraints are directly used to constrain Viterbi decoding.
I have had many sources of inspiration for this work. During my
research, I found that the subject attracted considerable interest in
scattered corners of the world. In spite of a voluminous literature in the
field, observers in diverse locations and positions shared a view, perhaps
for different reasons, that some crucial links and relationships had so far
been bypassed. My ambition was to build on the knowledge and insights
accumulated in economics while trying to explore some new avenues of
Digital library is commonly seen as a type of information retrieval system which stores and accesses digital content remotely via computer networks. However, the vision of digital libraries is not limited to technology or management, but user experience. This book is an attempt to share the practical experiences of solutions to the operation of digital libraries. To indicate interdisciplinary routes towards successful applications, the chapters in this book explore the implication of digital libraries from the perspectives of design, operation, and promotion....
Performing experiments in low Earth orbit has been the focus of much of the research funded by
NASA’s Physical Sciences Division (PSD) and its predecessors for over 30 years. This microgravity
research can be divided into five broad areas, all of which focus primarily on phenomena that are
strongly perturbed by gravity: biotechnology, combustion, fluid physics, fundamental physics, and
A number of developments have inadvertently exposed the extent to which the
accountancy profession had become a major industry
and, thus, indirectly invited critical
reflection upon the relevance and adequacy of its regulation. Consideration of the three
episodes allows us to explore how accountants have responded to the challenge of change
and, more specifically, how they have sought to address and neutralise the threat to the image
of themselves (and associated material benefits) as responsible, independent professionals.
Many harms flow across the ever-more porous sovereign borders of a globalizing
world. These harms expose weaknesses in the international legal regime built on
sovereignty of nation states. Using the Trail Smelter arbitration, one of the most cited
cases in international environmental law, this book explores the changing nature of
state responses to transboundary harm. Taking a critical approach, the book examines
the arbitration’s influence on international law generally and international environ-
mental law specifically.
Advantages to the promoter are that he has direct access to the plant sup-
plier to specify his requirements and agree all technical details. He can receive
plant drawings in good time to complete the structural designs.
Adisadvantage is that, if the plant supplier is late on his promised delivery,
the promoter may have to pay the contractor for delay. To guard against this,
plant delivery times quoted to the civil contractor can allow a ‘safety margin’
on the plant supplier’s quoted delivery time.
Fourth, this study applies new methodologies which have never been applied to
emerging markets. For instance, Chapter 5 explores the determinants of risk-adjusted mutual
fund performance using multidimensional regression in addition to the common approach,
which is to use a zero-cost trading strategy. This alternative methodology can explore several
factors simultaneously while controlling the effect between one and another. Using the two
methods allows us to examine determinants of fund performance statistically and
economically and it provides more meaningful results.
In the short-run, however, substantial differences existed. During
the First World War entertainment expenditure moved in opposite
directions in France and Britain and remained stable in the US. During the
great depression US real entertainment expenditure shrunk substantially,
while European levels remained stable. The French expenditure level was
substantially lower than in the other two countries, about a fifth in 1938
using exchange rates, although the difference is difficult to quantify
because of devaluation of the franc and purchasing power parity issues.
The principal charge to the Committee on Elementary Particle Physics in the
21st Century was to recommend priorities for the U.S. particle physics
program for the next 15 years. Described in the Executive Summary and
more fully presented in the Overview, the committee’s considered response is laid
out in detail in the main text of this report, which begins by discussing the scientific
challenges in particle physics and conveying the current status of the U.S.
program and then presents the committee’s consensus on the best way to sustain a
competitive and globally relevant U.S.
We have the power to explore the planets and walk the moon. We have
the power to coax green from the deserts. We have the power to map
the human genome.
Yet in the year 2005, in millions of communities in every corner of the globe,
people are suffering because those with political power have failed to meet
their most basic responsibilities. That failure is seen in the crisis of local health
systems that do not work, that exclude the poor, abuse and marginalize women,
sow distrust and feed corruption.
Tungsten Carbide - Processing and Applications, provides fundamental and practical information of tungsten carbide from powder processing to machining technologies for industry to explore more potential applications. Tungsten carbide has attracted great interest to both engineers and academics for the sake of its excellent properties such as hard and wear-resistance, high melting point and chemically inert. It has been applied in numerous important industries including aerospace, oil and gas, automotive, semiconductor and marine as mining and cutting tools, mould and die, wear parts, etc.
In addition to visual art, the conference also covered a topic of
special interest in visual neuroaesthetics: facial beauty. Other peo-
ple’s faces constitute highly relevant stimuli for humans, and face
perception is mediated by distributed neural regions (Ishai, 2007),
including the extrastriate cortex, which is specially dedicated to
processing individual identity, and the superior temporal sulcus,
which processes facial movements involved in speech and direct-
In a dynamic admissions landscape, one of the primary drivers
of admissions success is static and unchanging—an effective,
error-free application. While it may seem rudimentary, applicants
are encouraged to thoroughly proofread their applications for
careless errors and enlist trusted friends, family, colleagues or a
skilled admissions consultant to do the same to avoid the number
one most common application faux pas. Applicants also need to
resist the temptation to copy and paste material from one appli-
cation to another, or to decide that an essay is “good enough.
To explore the important factors advertisers weigh when considering digital interactive media and direct mail. Each medium has its own distinct characteristics and each has unique advantages and drawbacks. Advertisers must be able to compare the merits of these media and understand the most cost-effective ways to use them in their media mix.
Following the conclusion of the “Strengthening
country office capacity to support sexual and
reproductive health in the new aid environment”
project, a series of four country case-studies were
undertaken in Malawi, Lao People’s Democratic
Republic, Senegal and Tajikistan in early 2011.
