  • The first section of this chapter explores corruption, modelled as a non-fatal transmissible infection which divides a community into 4 compartments: Susceptible, Infective, Removed and Resistant. The Removed class has age structure. The corruptionfree steady state, though unstable, can be stabilized by feedback control. The efficiency of the measure depends on a number of parameters, especially the rates at which susceptibles become resistant, and the infective are removed or become resistant. The second part analyses disease transmission as a saturable interaction.

  • Because of the frequent, often daily, exposure to a large number and diversity of pathogens (disease-causing agents), wastewater personnel have general and specific concerns related to the potential health hazards presented by pathogens. Pathogens commonly found in wastewater and of concern to wastewater personnel include viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoans, and helminths. Allergens, endotoxins, and exotoxins are also found in wastewater and represent a concern to wastewater personnel.

However, we have also witnessed the elucidation of epigenetic phenomena that violate conventional notions of inheritance.

  • A pandemic is a global disease outbreak. A flu pa demic occurs when a new influenza virus emerge for which people have little or no immunity, and f which there is no vaccine. The disease spreads ea ily person-to-person, causes serious illness, and can sweep across the country and around the world in a very short time. It is difficult to predict when the next influenza pandemic will occur or how severe it will be. Wherever and whenever a pandemic starts, every one around the world is at risk.

  • Our bodies are amazing structures that defend us against infections under normal circumstances. As you read this chapter you will learn about disease-causing microorganisms, how the body defends itself against infections, and ways that infections might occur. You also learn how, as a medical assistant, you can be instrumental in helping to break the cycle of infection by practicing asepsis in the office setting as well as by educating patients in the prevention of disease transmission.

  • A study to measure indoor concentrations and emission rates of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including formaldehyde, was conducted in a new, unoccupied manufactured house installed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) campus. The house was instrumented to continuously monitor indoor temperature and relative humidity, heating and air conditioning system operation, and outdoor weather. It also was equipped with an automated tracer gas injection and detection system to estimate air change rates every 2 h.

  • Having studied the effect of monetary policy and capital ows shocks on housing activity, our second contribution is to explore how nancial innovation affects the transmission of the two shocks. Using an index of mortgage market development constructed in IMF (2008), 1 we split our sample in two groups of countries (with high and low mortgage market development) and estimate our panel VAR model across the two subsamples. We also split the sample using the ratio of mortgage debt to GDP in 2004.

  • Breath sounds have long been important indicators of respiratory health and disease. Acoustical monitoring of respiratory sounds has been used by researchers for various diagnostic purposes. A few decades ago, physicians relied on their hearing to detect any symptomatic signs in respiratory sounds of their patients. However, with the aid of computer technology and digital signal processing techniques in recent years, breath sound analysis has drawn much attention because of its diagnostic capabilities.

  • A lot of the demand, however went to spectator entertainment, and to reduce bottlenecks and increase revenues, entrepreneurs started to use cinema technology. Consumers reacted favourably to this technology, giving entrepreneurs incentives to develop it further. Using informal comparative growth analysis, the paper finds that, over time, in an evolutionary process, more and more expenditure was moved away from things such as tobacco and alcohol to entertainment expenditure, and within entertainment expenditure, more and more was spent on cinema.

  • Several studies have addressed the cross-language transfer of comprehension skills and strategies. Royer and Carlo (1991) examined the transfer of listening and reading comprehension skills from Spanish to English by 49 sixth-grade students enrolled in a transitional bilingual education program. Results indicated that students’ English reading performance at the end of sixth grade was most highly correlated with their reading in Spanish a year earlier. That is, good fifth-grade readers in Spanish became good sixth-grade readers in English.

  • Many disorders exhibit the feature of locus heterogeneity, which refers to the fact that mutations in different genes can cause phenotypically similar disorders. For example, osteogenesis imperfecta (Chap. 357), long QT syndrome (Chap. 226), muscular dystrophy (Chap. 382), homocystinuria (Chap. 358), retinitis pigmentosa (Chap. 29), and hereditary predisposition to colon cancer (Chap. 87) or breast cancer (Chap. 86) can each be caused by mutations in distinct genes.

The procedure as well as the minor complications of bruising and bleeding should be explained to the patient. Site-specific complications for deep needle aspiration biopsy should be described to the patient if image guided FNAB is performed. Informed consent should be obtained from the patient, guardian or legal representative.

  • The inclusion of Business Angels in the range of ‘informal’ (as opposed to ‘institutional’) investors provides us an indication that there are potential difficulties in measuring the size of the Business Angel community. Mason and Harrison identify two main problems, identification and definition. Regarding the former, in his seminal work on Business Angels, William Wetzel (1983) notes that the total population of Business Angels is unknown and probably unknowable on account of their invisibility, desire for anonymity, and the undocumented nature of their investing.

  • This study, given its Bayesian approach, is related to the recent article by Baks, Metrick, and Wachter (2001), who estimate funds' alphas using informative prior beliefs about alpha. They investigate the degree to which informative priors can preclude an investor from infer- ring that at least one actively managed fund has a positive alpha. This inference relates to an investment problem of a mutual fund investor who can also earn the hypothetical costless returns on the benchmark indexes.

  • At the front of your villa create a grand entrance with an open veranda held up with pillars. How many pillars you will need will depend on the size of your villa, but you’ll probably want around four to six, divided on either side of a wider opening. You can make these from toilet or kitchen roll tubes or by rolling a piece of card into a tube and securing with sticky tape. The pillars should be a couple of centimetres shorter than buildings 1 and 3. Paint your pillars brown to look like wood. Use tabs of sticky tape to secure your columns to the base of...
