  • In our quest to elucidate the origin of the universe and the formation of galaxies, particularly that of the Milky Way in which we live, astounding progress has been made in recent years through observational and theoretical studies. Not only have gigantic surveys covering a large fraction of the sky brought statistics enlightening evolutionary paths of galaxies, but powerful instruments, such as radio interferometers and ground- and space-based optical/ infrared telescopes, have been able to map individual objects with high sensitivity and spatial resolution.

  • For many classically chaotic systems it is believed that the quantum wave functions become uniformly distributed, that is the matrix elements of smooth observables tend to the phase space average of the observable. In this paper we study the fluctuations of the matrix elements for the desymmetrized quantum cat map. We present a conjecture for the distribution of the normalized matrix elements, namely that their distribution is that of a certain weighted sum of traces of independent matrices in SU(2).

  • We propose a set of open-source software modules to perform structured Perceptron Training, Prediction and Evaluation within the Hadoop framework. Apache Hadoop is a freely available environment for running distributed applications on a computer cluster. The software is designed within the Map-Reduce paradigm. Thanks to distributed computing, the proposed software reduces substantially execution times while handling huge data-sets. The distributed Perceptron training algorithm preserves convergence properties, thus guaranties same accuracy performances as the serial Perceptron. ...

  • The goal of our research is to develop an autonomous robot for subsurface mapping. We are motivated by the growing need for mapping buried pipes, hazardous waste, landmines and other buried objects. Most of these are large scale mapping problems, and to manually construct subsurface maps in these cases would require a significant amount of resources. Therefore, automating the subsurface mapping process is an important factor in alleviating these problems. To achieve our goal, we have developed a robotic system that can autonomously gather and process Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) data.

  • Leif Mejlbro was educated as a mathematician at the University of Copenhagen, where he wrote his thesis on Linear Partial Differential Operators and Distributions. Shortly after he obtained a position at the Technical University of Denmark, where he remained until his retirement in 2003. He has twice been on leave, first time one year at the Swedish Academy, Stockholm, and second time at the Copenhagen Telephone Company, now part of the Danish Telecommunication Company, in both places doing research....

  • The final article in this section presents a modification to the Green’s function approach for modeling acoustic pressure, where the use of conformal mapping is replaced by a group of bound vortices. The author shows that the approach is readily extended to three dimensions. The method is discussed in the context of aircraft noise.

  • The time required to reach other planets makes planetary surface exploration missions prime targets for automation. Sending rovers to other planets either instead of or together with people can also significantly reduce the danger and cost involved. Teams of rovers are both more fault tolerant (through redundancy) and more efficient (through parallelism) than single rovers if the rovers are coordinated well

  • What does a Distributer do? While Distributers are invisible to most consumers their role is to bridge the geographical gap between producer and retailer. Supermarkets and department stores couldn't exist without a complicated distribution system, capable of moving enormous amounts of product from point A – the producer to point C – the consumer. Distributors add significantly to the cost of the products we buy but they deliver a valuable service in providing access to the marketplace so producers can focus their energies on manufacturing the product.

  • Our technique determines per-application resource quo- tas in the database and storage caches, on the fly, in a transparent manner, with minimal changes to the DBMS, and no changes to existing interfaces between compo- nents. Towards this objective, we use an online perfor- mance estimation algorithm to dynamically determine the mapping between any given resource configuration setting and the corresponding application latency.
