  • his monograph presents methods for full comparative distributional analysis based on the relative distribution. This provides a general integrated framework for analysis, a graphical component that simplifies exploratory data analysis and display, a statistically valid basis for the development of hypothesis-driven summary measures, and the potential for decomposition - enabling the examination of complex hypotheses regarding the origins of distributional changes within and between groups.

  • A distributional method for part-of-speech induction is presented which, in contrast to most previous work, determines the part-of-speech distribution of syntactically ambiguous words without explicitly tagging the underlying text corpus. This is achieved by assuming that the word pair consisting of the left and right neighbor of a particular token is characteristic of the part of speech at this position, and by clustering the neighbor pairs on the basis of their middle words as observed in a large corpus.

  • Power engineering is the oldest and most traditional of the various areas within electrical engineering, yet no other facet of modern technology is currently undergoing a more dramatic revolution in technology or business structure. Perhaps the most fundamental change taking place in the electric utility industry is the move toward a quantitative basis for the management of service reliability.

  • A major focus of current work in distributional models of semantics is to construct phrase representations compositionally from word representations. However, the syntactic contexts which are modelled are usually severely limited, a fact which is reflected in the lexical-level WSD-like evaluation methods used.

  • Existing word similarity measures are not robust to data sparseness since they rely only on the point estimation of words’ context profiles obtained from a limited amount of data. This paper proposes a Bayesian method for robust distributional word similarities. The method uses a distribution of context profiles obtained by Bayesian estimation and takes the expectation of a base similarity measure under that distribution.

  • The computation of selectional preferences, the admissible argument values for a relation, is a well-known NLP task with broad applicability. We present L DA - SP, which utilizes LinkLDA (Erosheva et al., 2004) to model selectional preferences. By simultaneously inferring latent topics and topic distributions over relations, L DA - SP combines the benefits of previous approaches: like traditional classbased approaches, it produces humaninterpretable classes describing each relation’s preferences, but it is competitive with non-class-based methods in predictive power. ...
