  • A statistical analysis of new data suggests that television broadcasting will continue to prosper, despite increasing competition from cable TV carrying distant signals. Data on cable and noncable audience in 121 countries with well-defined signal choice support generalized least squares estimates of two models: total audience and audience shares. The models are used to simulate the effect of cabl......

  • The aim of this first exercise, of an aggregate nature, was to give an overall capital figure for the whole of the Spanish banking system. The analysis was top-down, as the information used enabled a sufficiently precise estimate to be made for the whole of the banking system, but was not sufficiently granular to provide for individual bank estimates.

  • For developing an appropriate strategy for combating tuberculosis in the country, it is necessary to obtain a precise estimate of the disease in the community. The process of estimating it for as large and diverse a country as India is not only difficult, but is also expensive and time consuming.

  • With the proliferation of Web and multimedia services, and virtual private networks (VPNs) connecting corporate sites, more versatile Internet routing protocols have become critical. Current Internet packet forwarding is based on the destination address. Simple routing algorithms that determine forwarding paths based on the minimum number of hops or delay to a specified destination are no longer sufficient. The need to support diverse traffic types and applications with quality demands (see Figure 1) imposes new requirements on routing in the (now commercial) Internet.

  • Asia’s ongoing economic transformation has captured the world’s imagination. Many marvel at the speed a diverse region packed with poverty has laid the groundwork for future prosperity. They acknowledge the massive hurdles crossed to get this far, but are nonetheless awed by those still to be surmounted. Asia’s role in the world economy is growing, but so too are the challenges in keeping its transformation on track. The genesis of Asia’s transformation is critical. • Differential evolution is one of the most recent global optimizers. Discovered in 1995 it rapidly proved its practical efficiency. This book gives you a chance to learn all about differential evolution. On reading it you will be able to profitably apply this reliable method to problems in your field. As for me, my passion for intelligent systems and optimization began as far back as during my studies at Moscow State Technical University of Bauman, the best engineering school in Russia. At that time, I was gathering material for my future thesis.

  • Economic policy makers, macroprudential supervisors or investors need reliable empiri- cal estimates of the equilibrium level of credit in the economy. When the level of credit is low, high dynamics of credit might re°ect an adjustment to the equilibrium, ¯nancial deepening in emerging economies for instance. When the level of credit is high, even a one-digit growth rate of credit may be considered excessive. Deviations of credit from its equilibrium often lead to a widening of macroeconomic imbalances, e.g.

  • When the history of the Nineteenth Century--'the Wonderful Century,' as it has, not inaptly, been called--comes to be written, a foremost place must be assigned to that great movement by which evolution has become the dominant factor in scientific progress, while its influence has been felt in every sphere of human speculation and effort. At the beginning of the Century, the few who ventured to entertain evolutionary ideas were regarded by their scientific contemporaries, as wild visionaries or harmless 'cranks'--by the world at large, as ignorant 'quacks' or 'designing atheists.

  • Ofcom will adopt an awards process consistent with its statutory functions and duties. The Broadcasting Act 1996 already sets out the process whereby Ofcom awards multiplex licences, including the basis on which applications are made and assessed – i.e. through a competitive beauty contest process13 . The existing process remains largely fit for purpose, subject to removal of provisions which are no longer considered necessary (e.g. the promotion of DTT equipment).

  • In the fall of 1929, the market value of all shares listed on the New York Stock Exchange fell by 30 percent. Many analysts then and now take the view that stocks were then overvalued and the stock market was in need of a correction. Irving Fisher argued that the fundamentals were strong and the stock market was undervalued. In this paper, we estimate the fundamental value of corporate equity in 1929 using data on stocks of productive capital and tax rates as in McGrattan and Prescott (2000, 2001) and compare it to actual stock valuations. We find that the stock market in 1929 did...

  • step example, follows: A municipal issuer and counterparty agree to a $100 mil lion “plain vanilla” swap starting in January 2006 that calls for a 3-year maturity with the municipal issuer paying the Swap Rate (fixed rate) to the counterparty and the counter- party paying 6-month LIBOR (floating rate) to the issuer. Using the above formula, the Swap Rate can be calculated by using the 6-month LIBOR “futures” rate to estimate the present value of the floating component payments. Pay ments are assumed to be made on a semi-annual basis (i.e., 180-day periods)....

  • The estimates for a sample of 56 large and emerging economies are summarised in Graph A. The stacked shaded areas show the stock of bank credit to non-banks (including governments and adjusted for exchange rate movements), broken down into domestic credit (tan area) and cross-border credit (salmon area). By contrast, the dashed black lines show the same credit total expressed in US dollars on an unadjusted basis. What first strikes the eye is the difference in the importance of cross-border credit across regions.
