WELCOME TO Ivor Horton’s Beginning Visual C++ 2012. With this book, you can become an
effective C++ programmer using Microsoft’s latest application-development system, Visual Studio
2012. I aim to teach you the C++ programming language, and then how to apply C++ in the
development of your own Windows applications. Along the way, you will also learn about many of
the exciting new capabilities introduced by this latest version of Visual C++.
Visual C++ 2012 comes as part of any of the editions of the Microsoft development environment Visual

Four years after the .NET Framework first hit the programming scene, smart client applications
still refuse to die.
This is significant because when .NET first appeared, all too many people assumed it was
about to usher in a new world of Web-only programming. In fact, for a short time Microsoft’s
own Web site described the .NET Framework in a single sentence as a “platform for building
Web services and Web applications”—ignoring the Windows technology that made the company
DrawTools sample shows how to create a Windows Forms application for drawing
graphic objects in a Windows client area using mouse and drawing tools. Drawing tools
implemented in this sample are: Rectangle, Ellipse, Line, and Pencil. There are wellknown
techniques for creating such type of applications, like: interaction with mouse,
flicker-free drawing, implementing of drawing and selection tools, objects selection,
managing of objects Z-order etc. MFC developers may learn all this stuff from MFC
GDI+ provides the basic functionality to implement graphics in
WinForms. GDI+ resides in System.Drawing.dll assembly.
The Graphics class is present in the System.Drawing namespace.
It cannot be inherited.
The CreateGraphics() method is used to create the Graphics
object. It is a method of the Control class.
Graphics objects can also be created from any object that derives
from the Image class.

The Furniture Factory user interface employs three windows. The Sketch window displays
freehand sketches the designer draws with a tablet and stylus (Figure 5-a). The 3-D window has
two functions: to enable the designer to view the design and to edit its parts. Figure 5-b shows a
3-D view of the bookshelf generated from the sketch. These parts can also be moved and rotated.
The Parts window displays the parts and their joints (Figure 9-a). The rest of this section
describes these components and their roles in Furniture Factory. ...
Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen sat one morning in the window-bay of their father’s house in Beldover, working and talking. Ursula was stitching a piece of brightly-coloured embroidery, and Gudrun was drawing upon a board which she held on her knee. They were mostly silent, talking as their thoughts strayed through their minds. ‘Ursula,’ said Gudrun, ‘don’t you REALLY WANT to get married?’ Ursula laid her embroidery in her lap and looked up. Her face was calm and considerate. ‘I don’t know,’ she replied. ‘It depends how you mean.’ Gudrun was slightly taken aback.
AutoCAD is a very powerful 2D drafting application,
but behind the user interface (toolbars, pull-down
menus, and drawing window) lie the capabilities of
navigating and creating 3D models and generating
presentation-quality images from 3D models to share
with your clients. Before you begin navigating or creating
your own 3D models from 3D solids or surfaces or using
materials and user-defined lights to generate a photoreal-
istic rendering of a 3D model, you must become familiar
with how AutoCAD’s user interface works in 3D.
As with all good Windows programs — and AutoCAD is a very good
Windows program — you can make your drawings appear on-screen in
For a start, there’s the . . . er, Start button, the one that Mick and the Rolling
Stones sang about way back when Bill Gates launched Windows 95 on an
unsuspecting world. To get to AutoCAD 2007 (or AutoCAD LT 2007), you click
Start➪Programs➪Autodesk➪AutoCAD 2007➪AutoCAD 2007. (You can tell
you’re at the end of the line because the last AutoCAD 2007 has a unique pro-
gram icon rather than a generic folder icon beside it.
As mentioned, C# and the .NET platform were first introduced to the world in 2002 and were intended to
offer a much more powerful, more flexible, and simpler programming model than COM. As you will see
during the remainder of this book, the .NET Framework is a software platform for building systems on
the Windows family of operating systems, as well as on numerous non-Microsoft operating systems such
as Mac OS X and various Unix/Linux distributions. To set the stage, here is a quick rundown of some
core features provided courtesy of .NET...
The purpose of this practical manual is to describe and illustrate each step of the basic surgical procedures involved in the placement of implants in qualified patients. To that end, each procedure is briefly but lucidly described; carefully illustrated in a series of drawings of the techniques and instrumentation used; and reinforced through clinical photographs, including radiographic and postoperative follow-up views.
Learning AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT is a bit like trying to decide
which came first—the chicken or the egg. On one hand, you
need to know the basics before you can start drawing. On the other
hand, understanding the basics can be very difficult if you haven’t
had the experience of drawing something. In this Quick Start chapter,
you resolve this problem by drawing, dimensioning, and printing a
simple window in AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT.
AutoCAD 101 A hierarchy of title bars
Like most Windows programs, AutoCAD has a title bar at the top of its program window that reminds you which program you’re in (not that you’d ever mistake the AutoCAD window for, say, Microsoft Word!). At the right side of the title bar is the standard set of three Windows control buttons: Minimize, Maximize/Restore, and Close. Each drawing window within the AutoCAD program window has its own title bar.
Figure 1.1, shown earlier in this chapter, shows a typical layout of the AutoCAD program window. Along the top is the menu bar, and just below that are the Workspaces and Standard Annotation toolbars. At the bottom are the Command window and the status bar. To the right is the Dashboard. The drawing area occupies the rest of the screen. AutoCAD calls the window layout a workspace; you can save and recall a workspace at any time using the Workspaces toolbar. The workspace in Figure 1.1 is called the 2D Drafting & Annotation workspace....
Stand your four buildings in place on the base following our
floor plan. Before you stick them down, mark out where you
would like to have the windows and doors.
Windows would have been rectangular in shape with wooden
frames and light green or blue glass. Doors were made from
wooden boards, with two supporting planks added
horizontally for extra strength. Draw or paint the windows
and doors on the walls using a black pen to add detail.
Now your buildings are ready, stick them to the main base.

The Furniture Factory program is a proof-of-concept working prototype built to explore how to
help designers construct physical prototypes using rapid prototyping and manufacturing
machines. It provides a sketch-based design interface that a designer can use to draw furniture in
3-D. The design is then displayed in an isometric viewing window where the designer can view it
and edit it. The program then decomposes the 3-D model into flat panels that are displayed in the
