  • At the same time, high tech professionals often perceive work as a “serious game” (Strannegård & Friberg, 2001), and not drudgery: they involve in playful behaviors at work (Hunter, Jemielniak, & Postuła, 2010). Software engineers often participate in non-paid, open collaboration production (Lakhani & Von Hippel, 2003). Modes of collaboration established in virtual and high-tech communities are similarly transforming workplace relations in the brick-and-mortar organizations (Benkler, 2006).

  • Progress in collaborative networks continues showing a growing number of manifestations including virtual organizations, virtual enterprises, dynamic supply chains, professional virtual communities, collaborative virtual laboratories, etc. with a wide spectrum of application domains. The realization that all these collaborative forms represent variations of a more general paradigm has lead to their consolidation into Collaborative Networks (CN) as anew scientific discipline.

  • This design guide defines the comprehensive functional components required to build a site-to-site virtual private network (VPN) system in the context of enterprise wide area network (WAN) connectivity. This design guide covers the design topology of dynamic multipoint VPN (DMVPN). This guide is part of an ongoing series that addresses VPN solutions, using the latest VPN technologies from Cisco, and based on practical design principles that have been tested to scale.

  • Tourism is a dynamic part of our economy. The global hospitality and tourism industry, which blends the lodging, food, attractions, cultural and travel industries, is the world’s largest industry with $4.5 trillion in expenditures generating 212 million jobs. The World Tourism Organization (WTO) currently projects that by the year 2010, 338 million people will be employed in the industry that will grow to $8.4 trillion in expenditures.

  • Computed tomography (CT) is the mainstay of cancer imaging outside of the central nervous system. Advances in multidetector CT (MDCT) technology have had a profound impact on its diagnostic capabilities. Such techniques as multiphase, single breath-hold imaging, CT angiography (CTA), volume rendering and virtual colonography owe their success to the development of multidetector arrays with continuously moving gantries.

  • When the field of microfluidics emerged in the early 1990s, it was primarily focused on the development of analytical microdevices. Since then, microfluidics has expanded its influence into virtually every branch of science and engineering. There are many driving forces behind this explosive growth. To name a few: • Scaling properties afforded by miniaturization are desirable for many applications. For example, enhanced mass transfer and heat dissipation enable faster chemical separations without sacrificing separation performance....

  • The Object Management Group (OMG) is an open membership, not-for-profit consortium that produces and maintains computer-industry specifications for interoperable applications. To achieve this goal, the OMG specifies open standards for every aspect of distributed computing, from analysis and design through infrastructure to application objects and components defined on virtually every enterprise middleware platform. OMG’s membership roster includes virtually every large company in the computer industry, and hundreds of smaller ones.

  • Today, the data acquisition technology has found its way into virtually every segment of electronics. A digital signal processing (DSP) system accepts analog signals as input, converts those analog signals to numbers, performs computations using the numbers and eventually converts the results of the computations back into analog signals. Once converted to numbers, signals are unconditionally stable. Error detection and correction methods can be applied to store, transmit and reproduce numbers with no corruption. Signals stored digitally are really just large arrays of numbers.

  • Next, we can modify our model to account for different firm sizes. For notational convenience and ease of exposition, we have used a continuum model. A firm hires a unit mass of consumers. The size of the firm then becomes a normalization and hence has no bearing on the dynamics and steady-state properties. In practice, firms hire a finite number of workers, and the law of large number becomes a poor approximation when the firm is small. Even when a small firm draws from the same work force as any other firm, the variance of workers’ health-care cost may be larger.

  • We introduce a novel multi-resource allocator to dynam- ically allocate resources for database servers running on virtual storage. Multi-resource allocation involves pro- portioning the database and storage server caches, and the storage bandwidth between applications according to overall performance goals. The problem is challenging due to the interplay between different resources, e.g., changing any cache quota affects the access pattern at the cache/disk levels below it in the storage hierarchy.
