  • The author extends her appreciation to the graduate students at Mon- mouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey. I acknowledge their assistance in researching and reviewing Earth Science Web sites, their support and enthusiastic interest in this manual and in the larger process of infusing technology into their instruction and into their everyday lives. A number of students reviewed the first chapter for relevance and usabil- ity.

  • The [NASA] Administrator, in consultation with other agencies with space science programs, shall enter into an ar- rangement with the National Academies to assess impediments, including cost growth, to the successful conduct of interagency cooperation on space science missions, to provide lessons learned and best practices, and to recommend steps to help facilitate successful interagency collaborations on space science missions.

  • From John Glenn s mission to orbit Earth to the International Space Station program, space food research has met the challenge of providing food that tastes good and travels well in space. To better understand this process, we can look back through history. Explorers have always had to face the problem of how to carry enough food for their journeys. Whether those explorers are onboard a sailing ship or on the Space Shuttle, adequate storage space has been a problem.

  • The Sun to the Earth—and Beyond: A Decadal Research Strategy in Solar and Space Physics is the product of an 18-month effort that began in December 2000, when the National Research Council (NRC) approved a study to assess the current status and future directions of U.S. ground- and space-based programs in solar and space physics research. The NRC’s Space Studies Board and its Committee on Solar and Space Physics organized the study, which was carried out by five ad hoc study panels and the 15-member Solar and Space Physics Survey Committee, chaired by Louis J.

  • This report has been reviewed in draft form by individuals chosen for their diverse perspectives and technical expertise, in accordance with procedures approved by the NRC’s Report Review Committee. The purpose of this independent review is to provide candid and critical comments that will assist the institution in making its published report as sound as possible and to ensure that the report meets institutional standards for objectivity, evidence, and responsiveness to the study charge.

  • In the framework of the program "Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network" funded by Rockefeller Foundation, Vietnam Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environment carried out this study with the aim to strongly support the development of action plan to respond to climate change for Quy Nhon city. The study developed climate change (temperature and rainfall) and sea level rise scenarios corresponding to some key emission scenarios, namely A1FI, A2 and B2. Impacts of climate change on main sectors such as water resources, agriculture and tourism were also assessed.

  • In this paper the spline approximation was applied to the empirical vertical profiles of oceanographic parameters such as temperature, salinity or density to obtain a more precise and reliable result of interpolation. Our experiments with the case of observed temperature profiles in Eastern Sea show that the cubic polynomial spline method has a higher reliability and precision in a comparison with the linear interpolation and other traditional methods. The method was realized as a subroutine in our programs for oceanographic data management and manipulation.

  • From the time of the first Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries oil embargo nearly 30 years ago, the United States has looked to new technology for solutions to its energy problems. Indeed, the first government reports to recommend an energy research and development (R&D) agenda appeared within weeks of that 1973 event. In 1975, President Ford created the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA), consolidating under one umbrella existing R&D energy programs from several agencies. In late 1977, ERDA became part of the new Department of Energy (DOE).

  • From the interior of the Sun, to the upper atmosphere and near-space environment of Earth, and outward to a region far beyond Pluto where the Sun’s influence wanes, advances during the past decade in space physics and solar physics—the disciplines NASA refers to as heliophysics—have yielded spectacular insights into the phenomena that affect our home in space. This report, from the National Research Council’s (NRC’s) Committee for a Decadal Strategy in Solar and Space Physics, is the second NRC decadal survey in heliophysics.

  • This report originated in 1999 as a result of discussions between the Committee on Solar and Space Physics (CSSP) and officials within NASA’s Office of Space Science Sun- Earth Connections program. As noted in the statement of task (Appendix A), the objective of the study was to provide a scientific assessment and strategy for the study of magnetized plasmas in the solar system. By emphasizing the connections between locally occurring (solar system) structures and processes and their astrophysical counterparts, the study would contribute to a unified view of cosmic plasma behavior.

  • New specialties sometimes combine with the traditional fields and form new branches - for example Earth Systems Engineering and Management involves a wide range of subject areas including anthropology, engineering, environmental science, ethics and philosophy. A new or emerging area of application will commonly be defined temporarily as a permutation or subset of existing disciplines; there is often gray area as to when a given sub-field becomes large and/or prominent enough to warrant classification as a new "branch.
