Yet, as noted above, the reality is that no country in the world, no matter how advanced, has achieved true gender equality, as measured by comparable decision- making power, equal opportunity for education and advancement, and equal participation and status in all walks of human endeavour.

Ricardo Ernst, my fellow guest editor, has been an able partner responding with feed- back from all corners of the globe.

  • Many Roman villas had under-floor heating which would have been especially useful in the British winter! The Roman name, hypocaust, is Ancient Greek meaning ‘fire beneath’. The floor was supported on short columns made of stacked tiles. A fire would be kept burning (very hard work for the slaves!) in the furnace room, and the hot air would move through the under-floor area, heating the rooms above. The hot air and smoke escaped through channels in the walls. To make your hypocaust system, you will need to raise up your whole villa by around 6cm.

As an instructor , I have noticed that those students who describe being bored by a given film often cannot offer much in the way of interpretation of that film during group discussions, and that consequently they often perform poorly when writing about the film.

  • Moving Pathway Control Points: Given two doors, multiple path- ways are possible. By moving the control points of the pathway, which is represented as a cubic Bezier curve, the pathway can change its course to avoid colliding with furniture objects. As shown in Figure 7, the free space of a pathway is represented by a series of rectangles along the curve. Thus, pathways can also be regarded as “furniture objects” whose control points may be mod- ified, and a move can be defined as the translation of a pathway control point in a certain direction.

  • Because time-series studies focus on a given geographic location over a number of years, factors that are often thought to influence the health of the population, such as percentage of smokers, income level, occupational exposure to pollutants, access to medical care and age distribution, do not need to be incorporated into the analysis as they are considered to remain relatively constant within the study area over time. Typically, the only other factors aside from pollution included in these models are weather variables and seasonal controls.
