  • Ecotoxicological models have been applied increasingly to perform chemical risk assessments since the first models of this kind emerged about 25 years ago. The first ecotoxicological models were applied to very specific cases — for instance, cadmium contamination of Lake Erie or mercury contamination of Mex Bay, Alexandria. The models were inspired by the experience gained in ecological modeling and therefore contained good descriptions of ecological processes. Slightly later, the so-called fate models emerged, which were first developed by McKay and others.

  • It is intended that this book be suitable for a variety of engineers and ecologists, who may wish to gain an introduction to the rapidly growing field of ecological and environmental modelling. An understanding of the fundamentals of environmental problems and ecology, as presented for instance in the textbook Principles of Environmental Science and Technology is assumed. Furthermore, it is assumed that the reader has either a fundamental knowledge of differential equations and matrix calculations or has read the Appendix, which gives a brief introduction to these topics....

  • Average depth model has a variety of applications in hydraulic engineering, especially in applications that flow depth is much smaller than the width of the flow. In this method the vertical variation is negligible and the hydraulic variables average integrated from channel bed to the surface free for the vertical axis. in equations arising management, pure hydrostatic pressure is assumed that not really valid in the case of flow in the bed is curved and can not be described curvature effects of the bed.

  • The epidemiology of infectious diseases is one of the great triumphs of applied ecology. In particular, the public health importance of parasites has lead to a large literature, exploring their impact on the population dynamics, population genetics and evolutionary biology of human populations. An important milestone was the Dahlem Conference on population biology of infectious diseases, held in 1981. The resulting book (Anderson and May 1982) lucidly summarised the contemporary state of parasite ecology and epidemiology.

  • The last three rows demonstrated the crucial counterintuitive prediction that small prey would be excluded from the diet, independently of their encounter rate, if the encounter rate with large prey were above a certain quantifiable threshold. Those were heady days! Setting aside the fact that the small prey were not totally ignored, it seemed as though a very simple, testable model, derived from a few starting assumptions about rate maximization and constraints on foraging, could actually predicthowan animal responded in an experiment. It’s hard to overstate the excitement at the time....

  • In the course of researching and writing this book, I have been blessed with abundant help. Arthur McEvoy has been a personal and scholarly model for more than a decade, and it is to him that I owe the greatest thanks for anything that is creative in this project. Whenever recommending one of his favorite books or his foolproof model for writing, he often promised me, “This will change your life.” My studies with him did.

  • The main focus of this book is the presentation of the “inertial” view of population growth. This view provides a rather simple model for complex population dynamics, and is achieved at the level of the single species, without invoking species interactions. An important part of our account is the maternal effect. Investment of mothers in the quality of their daughters makes the rate of reproduction of the current generation depend not only on the current environment but also on the environment experienced by the preceding generation....

  • Over half of the world’s poor live in rural areas. Although urban poverty is rising, the correlation between poverty and remoteness from urban centres is strong in most countries and is expected to remain so in the foreseeable future. As compared with their urban counterparts, rural people are often isolated from economic opportunities and have less access to basic social services. Resource degradation is an acute problem in rural areas, with some 60% of the world’s poorest people living in ecologically vulnerable areas (Angelsen, 1997).

  • This book provides an interdisciplinary view of how to prepare the ecological and socio-economic systems to the reality of climate change. Scientifically sound tools are needed to predict its effects on regional, rather than global, scales, as it is the level at which socio-economic plans are designed and natural ecosystem reacts. The first section of this book describes a series of methods and models to downscale the global predictions of climate change, estimate its effects on biophysical systems and monitor the changes as they occur....
