At the time this book was first
published, in 1979, it was a well-known rule of thumb that in a typical
programming project approximately 50 percent of the elapsed
time and more than 50 percent of the total cost were expended in
testing the program or system being developed.
In 1979, Glenford Myers published
a book that turned out to be a classic. Myers’s original The Art of Software
Testing stood the test of time, 25 years on the publisher’s list of
available books. This fact alone is a testament to the solid, basic, and
valuable nature of his work.
During that same time, the current authors of the updated version
of this book published collectively more than 120 books, most of
them on computer software topics. Some of these books sold very
well, going through multiple versions....

Increasing student access to and success in the California State University (CSU) system is one of the primary goals of Access to Excellence, the strategic plan adopted by the CSU Board of Trustees in 2008. College readiness for first-time freshmen is critical if the CSU is to meet the workforce and economic needs of the state. To ensure student success, the CSU has implemented a number of strategies, such as the Early Assessment Program (EAP), the Entry Level Mathematics Test (ELM), and the English Placement Test (EPT), to properly place students in the appropriate college courses....

It is diffi cult to estimate the number of adult ESOL students in the
United States because many are highly mobile and some are undocu-
mented. According to the National Center for ESL Literacy Education,
“The most recent statistics from the U.S. Department of Education, Offi ce
of Vocational and Adult Education, show that 1,119,589 learners were
enrolled in federally funded, state-administered adult ESL classes. This
represents 42% of the enrollment in federally funded, state-administered
adult education classes” (Florez, personal communication, 2001).
The Graduate School of Education and Psychology enrolls approximately
1,700 students. With its main headquarters located at the West Los Angeles
Graduate Campus, the Graduate School also offers select programs at graduate
campuses in Malibu, Irvine, Encino, and Westlake Village, as well as online.
The Graduate School of Education and Psychology offers a total of 12 master’s
and doctoral programs in education and psychology, all of which are founded
on the theoretical understanding of service through leadership.
We are issuing 14 recommendations to NOP officials to improve program administration and internal controls. We recommend that NOP strengthen its enforcement procedures to determine what actions should be imposed on program violators, including civil penalties, and to timely issue the appropriate actions. We also recommend that officials timely resolve and track complaints from receipt through disposition.
Researchers in both machine Iranslation (e.g., Brown et al., 1990) and bilingual lexicography (e.g., Klavans and Tzoukermann, 1990) have recently become interested in studying parallel texts, texts such as the Canadian Hansards (parliamentary proceedings) which are available in multiple languages (French and English). This paper describes a method for aligning sentences in these parallel texts, based on a simple statistical model of character lengths. The method was developed and tested on a small trilingual sample of Swiss economic reports.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the operation of the Hoabinh
reservoir in the Red River Basin of Vietnam, and assess the room for its
improvement by application of system analysis and optimal control techniques.
The study aimed at establishing a foundation for further research
on inter-reservoir regulation of the Basin. Finally, this study provided
a testing ground for developing and comparing dierent reservoir optimization
We utilize a longitudinal survey of registrants for the Graduate Management Admissions Test
(GMAT) to estimate the economic returns to an MBA. The GMAT exam, an admissions requirement
for most MBA programs, is similar to the SAT for undergraduates without the competition from
the ACT. The survey, sponsored by the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC), was
administered in four waves, beginning in 1990 and ending in 1998.
14 In addition, survey responses
were linked to GMAC’s registration and test data, which includes personal background information
and GMAT scores.
The World Bank’s mission is to alleviate poverty and support sustainable development. The
conservation and sustainable use of natural habitats and biodiversity will contribute to these
goals by protecting ecosystem services that are critical to fulfilling these objectives. Biodiversity
is the foundation and mainstay of agriculture, forests, and fisheries. Biological resources provide
the raw materials for livelihoods, sustenance, medicines, trade, tourism, and industry.
Finally, the shape of the spending profile over the pay period, and the motivation
behind it, are important subjects for study in their own right. Our results add to the debate
on whether the industry in “payday loans” exploits self-control problems, by testing
whether households in fact experience a struggle for self-control between paydays.
We said that you should be ready to work. Here it is where you should be ready to work.
Homework assignments (also known as problem sets) are designed to test your endurance and
ability to work under pressure. And you’ll be under a lot of continuous pressure! It is not
uncommon to see 30-40 page problem sets, which you’ll be delivering every week or two, for
every one of your economics courses. Sounds rough? It is.
One thing is true (at least from our experience). Unless you are a brilliant / top-of-the-
class / remarkably well prepared student, it is...
