  • This collection of papers reflects the diversity of concepts, methods, and case studies that address the challenge of Managing for Healthy Ecosystems as holistic environmental management in the context of health, integrity, and sustainability. Ecosystem health embodies the capacity of ecosystems to function without impairment, while management concerns the assessment of ecosystem conditions relative to social goals and adoption of interventions to achieve designated goals.

  • The idea to apply an assessment of ecosystem health to environmental management emerged in the late 1980s. The parallels with the assessment of human health are very obvious. We go to the doctor to get a diagnosis (to determine what is wrong) and hopefully initiate a cure to bring us back to normal. The doctor will take various measurements and make examinations (pulse, blood pressure, sugar in the urine etc.) before making a diagnosis and suggesting a cure.

  • Exploring the implementation of participatory, multistakeholder, and transdisciplinary ecosystem health research, Integrated Assessment of Health and Sustainability of Agroecosystems combines the latest theories in complexity and management with practical tools and approaches for sustainable rural development research. Although the text focuses on smallholder farming communities in the central highlands of Kenya, the material discussed can be-and has been-effectively applied to agroecosystems in many other parts of the world.

  • Bivalves constitute one of the largest groups, in terms of biomass, of filter-feeding organisms in many freshwater ecosystems. Freshwater bivalves have been used in an increasingly diverse array of ecotoxicological applications over the past 30 years. Among the four families of freshwater bivalves, there are sharply differing reasons for their use in ecotoxicological research. The Corbiculidae, Dreissenidae and, to a lesser extent, the Sphaeriidae, have fulfilled the traditional role of ecotoxicological research organisms....

  • Plant species that invade an alien area and outgrow the native vegetation, establishing and increasing their own territory, often lead to negative economic, environmental, and social impacts. Even native species can behave like invasive species by their exponential spread. Similarly, not all non-native species are invasive. Many alien invasive species, however, do threaten the health and integrity of our terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

  • Natural and social scientists face a great challenge in the coming decades: to understand the role that humans play in ecosystems, particularly urban ecosystems. Cities and urbanizing regions are complex coupled humannatural systems in which people are the dominant agents. As humans transform natural landscapes into highly human-dominated environments, they create a new set of ecological conditions by changing ecosystem processes and dynamics.

  • You may be asked to choose between a “tax-qualified” long-term care insurance policy and one that is “non-tax-qualified.” There are important differences between the two types of policies. These differences were created by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). A federally tax-qualified long-term care insurance policy, or a qualified policy, offers certain federal income tax advantages. If you have a qualified long-term care policy and you itemize your deductions, you may be able to deduct part or all of the premium you pay for the policy.

  • These are two dramatically different exercises. In recent decades much work in the public health field has focused on the first, on identifying the primary causes of poor health, including their prevalence and distribution, and on developing an evidence-based understanding of the interventions that will work to addresses those causes. There is broad consensus on the methodology for evaluating evidence of the efficacy of interventions.

  • The foundation of human health rests on healthy, stable ecosystems. Our biotic environment provides us with the fundamentals necessary for healthy lives—food, water, oxygen, warmth, light, and fuel. Earth's ecosystems also supply the raw materials for our health-care services. The global fraying of ecosystems has grave implications for our health and our ability to treat illnesses, now and in the future.
