Learning mathematics in the middle
grades is a critical component in the
education of our nation’s youth. The
mathematics foundation laid during
these years provides students with the
skills and knowledge to study higher
level mathematics during high school,
provides the necessary mathematical
base for success in other disciplines such
as science, and lays the groundwork for
mathematically literate citizens. A
variety of evidence suggests that the
mathematics education landscape is
shifting and evolving rapidly....
The Board on International Comparative Studies in Education
(BICSE) was established by the National Research Council (NRC) in
1988 at the request of the U.S. Department of Education’s National
Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and the U.S. National Science
Foundation (NSF). Under its initial mandate, the board monitored
U.S. participation in large-scale international comparative studies.
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) has long collected
information on the number and characteristics of individuals with
education or employment in science and engineering and related
fields in the United States. One of the three vehicles employed by NSF for
collecting this information is the National Survey of College Graduates
This book was motivated by the author’s experience in teaching accounting at
postgraduate level (MBA and MSc) at Aston Business School and in-house training
provided for non-financial managers in many organizations to introduce them to
the use of financial tools and techniques.
My own education as an accountant was aimed at achieving professional recognition
and emphasized an uncritical acceptance of the tools and techniques that
I was taught.
This third edition of Analytical Chemistry for Technicians is the culmination and final product of a series
of four projects funded by the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education Program
and two supporting grants from the DuPont Company. The grant funds have enabled me to utilize an
almost limitless reservoir of human and other resources in the development and completion of this
manuscript and to vastly improve and update the previous edition. A visible example is the CD that
accompanies this book.
In today’s sluggish and uncertain economy, many people are returning
to school to prepare for a new career, one that will support them
now and into the future. The National Center for Education Statistics
(NCES) projects that enrollment will rise by 10 percent for students
under age 25 and 19 percent for students age 25 or older by 2017
(National Center for Education Statistics, 2009). Understanding
your industry and its expectations will facilitate your transition to the
workplace and support you in defining your professional role.
What would science be without measurement, and what would social
science be without social measurement? Social measurement belongs
to the widely accepted and fruitful stream of the empirical-analytic
approach. Statistics and research methodology play a central role, and
it is difficult to ascertain precisely when it all started in the social
sciences. An important subfield of social measurement is the quantification
of human behavior—that is, using measurement instruments
of which educational and psychological tests are the most prominent
Preliminary analysis of the data reveals some noteworthy similarities and differences between
Chile and the other countries considered. Over this sample period, Chilean interest rates are on
average higher, more volatile, and less persistent than the interest rates for the other countries.
However, in Chile, the degree of co-movement between retail bank interest rates and the money
market rate is essentially the same as in other countries.
Using longitudinal data from a cohort of middle school students from a large school district, we estimate separate “value-added” teacher effects for two subscales of a mathematics assessment under a variety of statistical models varying in form and degree of control for student background characteristics.
This volume argues that international human rights law has made a positive con-
tribution to the realization of human rights in much of the world. Although
governments sometimes ratify human rights treaties, gambling that they will
experience little pressure to comply with them, this is not typically the case.
Focusing on rights stakeholders rather than the United Nations or state pressure,
Beth A. Simmons demonstrates through a combination of statistical analyses and
case studies that the ratification of treaties leads to better rights practices on
This book will provide a comprehensive technical guide covering fundamentals, recent advances and open issues in wireless communications and networks to the readers. The objective of the book is to serve as a valuable reference for students, educators, scientists, faculty members, researchers, engineers and research strategists in these rapidly evolving fields and to encourage them to actively explore these broad, exciting and rapidly evolving research areas.
The gender gap in each dimension is then quantified
using two types of recent available data: a) published
national statistics and data from international
organizations, and b) survey data of a qualitative nature
from the annual Executive Opinion Survey of the World
Economic Forum. Following, is a brief description of
each of the five categories and the rationale behind
them. Details of the specific variables examined and
their sources may be found in the Appendix.
Existing Grant Funding: Existing grant funding should be evaluated as an alternative to
new funds. Congress could also evaluate including minimum cybersecurity protection
standards in grant proposals for grantees dealing with issues such as national security,
law enforcement, and critical infrastructures as a condition for receiving government
funds. These would include general protection standards such as updating computer
patches or running anti-virus software that would not be overly burdensome to grant
For more than eight years, the people of Great Britain have enjoyed the blessing of Cheap Postage. A literary gentleman of England, in a letter to his friend in Boston, dated London, March 23, 1848, says—“Our Post Office Reform is our greatest measure for fifty years, not only political, but educational for the English mind and affections. If you had any experience of the exquisite convenience of the thing, your speech would wax eloquent to advocate it.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the use of sample reweighting, in a behavioural tax
microsimulation model, to examine the implications for government taxes and expenditure of
population ageing in Australia. Tax microsimulation models are based on large-scale cross-sectional
surveys containing substantial information about the characteristics of individuals and house-
The American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF) is a non-profit professional development organization based in Washington, DC. Participants in our learning activities include: Government employees—Congressional staff, policymakers and Executive Branch aides; officers of professional and national associations; Washingtonbased state office staff; researchers and evaluators; education and public affairs media.
The goal of this project is to learn about the visual qualities that can be used to control
aesthetics in visualization. Psychologists have identified emotional and cognitive properties
believed to underlie the aesthetic judgement of images. Based on this work, I have chosen three
visual qualities that appear promising to aesthetics in visualization. I propose to vary these
qualities and conduct studies to evaluate the salience of each quality in terms of aesthetics.
Statistical analysis will be used to detect any significant changes in aesthetic judgement or
Among the recommendations of the report: a restoration economy
that creates jobs through coastal repair and environmental
monitoring; creation of a health care network with the proficiency to
diagnose and treat environmental exposures; immediate increase in
mental health care; independent seafood monitoring; future
research that does not only study those impacted but also provides
A few years since, the Editor of the following pages published a volume of "Religious Creeds and Statistics;"
and, as the work, although quite limited, met with general approbation, he has been induced to publish another
of the same nature, but on a much larger plan, trusting that it will prove more useful, and more worthy of
