Written for teachers, parents, and community officials as well as scientists and educators, this book describes how evolution reveals both the great diversity and similarity among the Earth's organisms; it explores how scientists approach the question of evolution; and it illustrates the nature of science as a way of knowing about the natural world.

  • Throughout the world, members of the education research community have long decried the lack of attention to research and scholarship that is evident in most education policies promulgated by state, provincial, and national legislatures. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 2001 (ESEA 2001), which was recently signed into law in the United States, is an interesting case to consider in this regard.

  • The contemporary debate about the nature of human nature, centering around the implications of Darwin’s theory of evolution, is the newest chapter in a long history of explorations. Confl icting ideas about human nature have always sat at the core of philosophical debates, often educational ones. Plato and Aristotle, for example, had differing views on human nature, and thus different approaches to educational philosophy.1 So too did Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, Hume and Rousseau

  • A humanist educational model can be defined as a system in which human values, dignity, reason and fulfilment in harmony with nature predominates. By contrast, the present system is based on utilitarian values to transform knowledge into commodities. Within this context we see the dehumanization of our children, young people and students. I assume that the function of higher education is to reify ruling class values into the social consciousness of students, and to train students to serve the capitalist machinery.

  • Environmentalists are often regarded as people wanting to stop one thing or another, and there are surely lots of things that ought to be stopped. The essays in this book, however, have to do with beginnings. How, for example, do we advance a long-delayed solar revolution? Or begin one in forest management? Or materials use? How do we reimagine and remake the human presence on earth in ways that work over the long haul? Such questions are the heart of what theologian Thomas Berry (1999) calls “the Great Work” of our age....

  • In the figure shown here (Figure 1), teaching contributes to the development of pupils’ action competence, which in turn should enable the pupils to act with regard to their own lives and living conditions. Teaching and educational processes have been put in the center of this model in order to stress that a health promoting school is not only about the food in the canteen, a smoke-free environment etc. This also means that pupils and teachers are considered to be the key-players at a health promoting school.

  • In calling this little book 'The Curse of Education,' I trust that I shall not be misunderstood to disparage culture. The term 'education' is used, for want of a better word, to express the conventional mode of teaching and bringing up children, and of educating youth in this and other civilized countries. It is with education systems, with the universal method of cramming the mind with facts, and particularly with the manufacture of uniformity and mediocrity by subjecting every individual to a common process, regardless of his natural bent, that I have chiefly to find fault. ...
