  • From its inception nearly 30 years ago, the optical subdiscipline now referred to as nonimaging optics, has experienced dramatic growth. The term nonimaging optics is concerned with applications where imaging formation is not important but where effective and efficient collection , concentration, transport and distribution of light energy is - i.e. solar energy conversion, signal detection, illumination optics, measurement and testing. This book will incorporate the substantial developments of the past decade in this field.

  • A volume of collected works is almost always a bad sign for one's research trajectory, an indication of declining productivity as much as professional recognition. We hope to be the exception that proves this rule because neither of us is willing to concede that we have reached the apex of our careers . However, we do think that the papers collected in this volume form a coherent and exciting story, one that bears retelling now that we have the luxury of seeing the forest for the trees .

  • For the comparison of the share of biomass within the microbial community samples were collected on monthly basis from the Adriatic Sea (N = 110) from one coastal (ST103) and one open sea (CA009) site during 2010. Seawater samples from the Adriatic Sea sites and offshore site in the English Channel were collected by Niskin bottles through vertical profile. At four shore sites from the English Channel samples were collected manually from the surface. All samples were fixed with formaldehyde (2% final concentration), kept in the dark at 4 ºC and analyzed within two weeks.

  • TDictionary represents a generic collection of key-value pairs. This class provides a mapping from a collection of keys to a collection of values. When you create a TDictionary object, you can specify various combinations of initial capacity, equality operation, and initial content. You can add a key that is associated with a corresponding value with the Add or AddOrSetValue methods. You can remove entries with Remove or Clear, which removes all key-value pairs. Adding or removing a key-value pair and looking up a key are efficient, close to O(1), because keys are hashed.

  • Over the last decade in the WHO European Region the health profes- sions have been under some pressure to promote patient education* as a major addition to pharmacological, physical and other forms of thera- py. Nevertheless, health care providers still need efficient educational programmes* in the long-term management* of chronic diseases*. Cur- rent programmes do not usually include educational methods or psy- chological support of patients. Their methodology has never been adequately formalized and this creates difficulties in educating other health care providers*.

  • The formation of persistent organic pollutants such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), known collectively as dioxins, is a recognized concern for cement manufacturing. Dioxins have the potential to form if chlorine is present in the input fuel or raw materials. Formation can be repressed, however, by the high temperatures and long residence times that are standard in cement kilns (Karstensen 2008).

  • The collection of seed from planted trees in a Seed Orchard (SO) Seed Production Area (SPA) generally requires access to seed-bearing branches at heights. High lift machinery or climbing methods can be used to obtain required working heights. High lift machinery is the more efficient option, reducing the risks associated with climbing and chainsaw operation. In cases where high lift machinery is not available or too expensive, climbing is a viable option.

  • The subjects then used an online system to perform the experimental task. A copy of the text specification with the example diagram was placed in front of the computer for easy reference, and the UML experimental diagrams were presented in random order for each subject. The subjects gave a yes/no response to each presented diagram, indicating whether they thought the diagram matched the specification or not: two keys on the keyboard were used for this input. 16 practice diagrams (randomly selected from the 21 experimental diagrams) were presented first.

  • One of the main problems when analysing the impact of remittances on development is the lack of full and reliable information on the volume, destination and use of this economic flow. The lack of information also limits the proposals for action that can be made by the Public Administration. Hence, we should start by improving data collection systems on remittances. On the one hand, we need to have a more precise image of the proportion of their savings that immigrants are sending to their countries of origin and analyse the factors that influence the frequency and volume...

  • Attempts to use lasers in medicine are so numerous and, historically, so diverse, that it proves difficult to describe them all in this chapter. Many laser ideas were introduced experimentally, evaluated clinically and later abandoned, giving way to other concepts in accordance with the availability of laser sources or delivery technologies. This process continues today. The present collection of laser applications thus describes the laser innovations at a given point in time only.

  • Onconase (ONC) is an amphibian member of the pancreatic ribonuclease superfamily that is selectively toxic to tumor cells. It is a much less efficient enzyme than the archetypal ribonuclease A and, in an attempt to gain fur-ther insight, we report the first atomic resolution crystal structure of ONC, determined in complex with sulfate ions at 100 K.

  • Unfortunately, unanimity is not always feasible. There are some respects in which conformity appears unavoidable, so I do not see how one can avoid the use of the political mechanism altogether. But the doctrine of "social responsibility" taken seriously would extend the scope of the political mechanism to every human activity. It does not differ in philosophy from the most explicitly collective doctrine. It differs only by professing to believe that collectivist ends can be attained without collectivist means.

  • Notes to Award criteria: Award criteria are not mandatory in the way the technical specifications are, but are additional criteria on which a contracting authority will base its award decision. As such, they are not pass/fall criteria, meaning that offers of products that don’t comply with them may still be withheld for the final decision, depending on their score on other award criteria, including the price. To stimulate further market uptake of ever improved environmental products, award criteria should be considered depending on the specific circumstances of each case. ...
