  • In offering this book to teachers of elementary chemistry the authors lay no claim to any great originality. It has been their aim to prepare a text-book constructed along lines which have become recognized as best suited to an elementary treatment of the subject. At the same time they have made a consistent effort to make the text clear in outline, simple in style and language, conservatively modern in point of view, and thoroughly teachable.

  • Of tlie stndy of elementary chemistry in schools is to educate the mind by giving it the right kind of exercise in tlie use of its powers, I have therefore tried to make a, judicious selection of the most fundamental facts and principles of chemistry, and to present these in such a way tliat the student must constantly use his senses to discover facts, his reason in drawing correct inferences from the data he collects, and good English in expressing accurately what he sees and thinks.

  • We have taught Chemistry and Physics for Anesthesia for nearly 10 years to more than 150 nurse anesthesia students. During that time, we struggled, because there was no text that supported our course. The importance of the physical sciences in anesthesia goes without saying, and every one of our students knows this. While we were continually impressed by the ability and motivation of our students, we were struck by the obvious: these students possessed only a minimal background in chemistry and almost no background in physics. Additionally, their math skills often were very rusty.
