  • We present an efficient algorithm for the redundancy elimination problem: Given an underspecified semantic representation (USR) of a scope ambiguity, compute an USR with fewer mutually equivalent readings. The algorithm operates on underspecified chart representations which are derived from dominance graphs; it can be applied to the USRs computed by large-scale grammars. We evaluate the algorithm on a corpus, and show that it reduces the degree of ambiguity significantly while taking negligible runtime. ...

  • Piezoelectric materials form the backbone of several components utilized in communication systems, defense systems, industrial automation, medical diagnostics, energy storage and harvesting, and information technology. In high performance piezoelectric applications the material of choice is based upon lead-based composition with Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) being the base. Recently worldwide environmental considerations are demanding the elimination of lead-based materials from all the consumer items. This has created urgency for finding alternative to PZT.

  • This book offers a contribution to current debates over child labor. It also presents child labor as a problem to which various branches of international law have made a response. Because of the broad range of international law sub- disciplines treated in this book, and because of the necessity of understanding the context of child labor as a social, economic and cultural issue, I have ben- efited from the contributions and support of many individuals and organiza- tions throughout the research and writing of this book....

  • A review is any activity in which a work product is distributed to reviewers who examine it and give feedback. Reviews are useful not only for finding and eliminating defects, but also for gaining consensus among the project team, securing approval from stakeholders, and aiding in professional development for team members. Reviews help teams find defects soon after they are injected making them cost less to fix than they would cost if they were found in test. All work products in a software project should be either reviewed or tested.

  • The solid product is a wet sludge of calcium sulfate which can be disposed of easily. So FGD does not eliminate pollution. What it does accomplish is to convert a big problem (emission of large volumes of air contaminated by harmful levels of gaseous SOx) into a small problem (collection and disposal of scrubber sludge). Dealing with the problem of air pollution is not cheap. An FGD system installed in a newly constructed power plant represents about one-third of the total cost of building the entire plant.

  • The deterioration of water quality in China seriously affects the inhabitants. For example, the residents in Chongqing and Guangyuan are suffering from diseases due to water pollution from industrial wastewater (Searchina 2004ab). Another serious problem is unsafe drinking water. According to Chinanet (2005), 300 million people in China cannot drink water which passes the standard for safe drinking, and some people in villages are suffering from diseases due to unsafe drinking water, like in Chongqing and Guangyuan.

  • Most analyses of the relationship between health and the economy focus on average health, but health is actually very unevenly distributed across society. In all countries with available data, significant differences in health exist between socioeconomic groups, in the sense that people with lower levels of education, occupation and/or income tend to have systematically higher morbidity and mortality rates.

  • This tab allows you to select a policy for client firewalls to use and the mode they are to run in. By default, a firewall runs in background mode to eliminate user interference, save system resources, and for a systems administrator to block unwanted traffic or content in a way that's completely hidden from a user. The default policy is Allow most. If some of a user’s custom applications that require network access are blocked and you consider the user experienced enough to manage all the network access request messages, you can turn the background mode off and enable Rules...

  • This is a simple unipolar stepper board that can control stepper motors rated to 30VDC. The FET drivers are rated at 50A, but in practicality this board should not be used with motors anywhere near that current for several reasons. The power supply voltage, heat sinks and cooling used for the FET’s of your own application play an extremely important part in making that determination. The FET package is designed for 50 Watts of dissipative power. If you’re not wise in electronics, the board should be built in stages and tested during each stage to eliminate problems....

  • Fundamental Requirements of Effective Preventive/Predictive Maintenance could eliminate almost 98% of the failures. Note the word “proper,” meaning that no new problems are injected. That also means, however, that costs will be higher than need be since components will be replaced before the end of their useful life, and more labor is required. Once the threshold set point has been determined, it should be monitored to detect when it is exceeded. The investment in monitoring depends on the period over which deterioration may occur, means of detection, and benefit value.

  • Contaminated bottom sediments and their negative impacts on water quality are a major problem in surface waters throughout the United States as well as in many other parts of the world. Even after elimination of the primary contaminant sources, these bottom sediments will be a main source of contaminants for many years to come. In order to determine environmentally-effective and cost-effective remedial actions, the transport and fate of these sediments and associated contaminants must be understood and quantified.

  • N-MODULAR REDUNDANCY In the previous chapter, parallel and standby systems were discussed as means of introducing redundancy and ways to improve system reliability. After the concepts were introduced, we saw that one of the complicating design features was that of the coupler in a parallel system and that of the decision unit and switch in a standby system. These complications are present in the design of analog systems as well as digital systems.
