  • Practice has a logic which is not that of the logician. This has to be acknowledged in order to avoid asking of it more logic than it can give, thereby condemning oneself either to wring incoherence out of it or to thrust a forced coherence upon it. (Bourdieu 1990:80) The impetus for this book emerged in the heat of practice. It was in the experience of painting two works—Reading Fiction (1995) (Illus. 1) and Reading Theory (1995) (Illus. 2)—that I came to question the representationalist logic that underpins contemporary understandings of the work of art.

Indeed, it is estimated that “the average child enters school with a reading vocabulary of only a handful of words but learns reading vocabulary at a rate of 3,000 to 4,000 words a year, accumulating a reading vocabulary of something like 25,000 words by the time he or she is in eighth grade and one that may be well over 50,000 words by the end of high school.” 4 A well planned vocabulary program will also contribute to vocabulary...

On the same occasion, a painting on enamelled steel plates was unveiled on the outside wall of the terminal building facing the central Nytorv Square. The artist Hanne Salamon was given a free hand to create this work of art. She says that her main intention was to create something simple with bright colours that would catch the eye of the busy passers-by. • This book began as a blog. That’s the twenty-first-century way of saying it began as a conversation. And that conversation started with Jason Kottke, the blogger who coined a phrase, “liberal arts 2.0,” that made us wonder: What might that mean? Pile on some posts at Snarkmarket by the two of us and our co-blogger Matt Thompson, and threads began to form. Mix in smart, curious commentary from the Snarkmarket community, and an opportunity emerged.

  • The primitive civilization of Chaldæa, like that of Egypt, was cradled in the lower districts of a great alluvial basin, in which the soil was stolen from the sea by long continued deposits of river mud. In the valley of the Tigris and Euphrates, as in that of the Nile, it was in the great plains near the ocean that the inhabitants first emerged from barbarism and organized a civil life. As the ages passed away, this culture slowly mounted the streams, and, as Memphis was older by many centuries than Thebes, in dignity if not in actual existence, so Ur and Larsam were older...
