AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION OF TURNOVER INTENTIONS OF INTERNAL AUDITORS Amenities could either increase or reduce the
extent of effectiveness sorting relative to this pure case, though the latter seems more likely.22
If, as the hedonics literature implies, schools are one of the more important determinants of
neighborhood desirability (see, e.g., Reback, 2001;
This paper describes a novel method by which a dialogue agent can learn to choose an optimal dialogue strategy. While it is widely agreed that dialogue strategies should be formulated in terms of communicative intentions, there has been little work on automatically optimizing an agent's choices when there are multiple ways to realize a communicative intention. Our method is based on a combination of learning algorithms and empirical evaluation techniques.
This paper examines the extent to which verb diathesis alternations are empirically attested in corpus data. We automatically acquire alternating verbs from large balanced corpora by using partialparsing methods and taxonomic information, and discuss how corpus data can be used to quantify linguistic generalizations. We estimate the productivity of an alternation and the typicality of its members using type and token frequencies.
This paper proposes to solve the bottleneck of finding training data for word sense disambiguation (WSD) in the domain of web queries, where a complete set of ambiguous word senses are unknown. In this paper, we present a combination of active learning and semi-supervised learning method to treat the case when positive examples, which have an expected word sense in web search result, are only given. The novelty of our approach is to use “pseudo negative examples” with reliable confidence score estimated by a classifier trained with positive and unlabeled examples.
We explore how active learning with Support Vector Machines works well for a non-trivial task in natural language processing. We use Japanese word segmentation as a test case. In particular, we discuss how the size of a pool affects the learning curve. It is found that in the early stage of training with a larger pool, more labeled examples are required to achieve a given level of accuracy than those with a smaller pool. In addition, we propose a novel technique to use a large number of unlabeled examples effectively by adding them gradually to a pool. ...
A general overview of the literature focusing on the origins of losses, discussing the intertemporal
solvency of central banks and modelling their balance sheets has been presented already in
Cincibuch et al. (2008; 2009). Many useful general references can also be found in a recently
published book edited by Milton and Sinclair (2011). In the present paper, we thus limit ourselves
to reviewing specifically those papers that have explicitly discussed the link from central bank
finances to policy pursuit, with an emphasis on empirical work.
This book is compiled to provide the reader a critical appreciation of key tools of Lean and Six Sigma and their implementation into both manufacturing and service organizations through drawing upon the research findings of a range of specialist scholars (including academics and practitioners) who have either proposed a conceptual model of framework for Lean/Six Sigma or have empirically gathered an extensive range of new data from organizations in the manufacturing and service sectors across a number of countries.
Adaptive filtering can be used to characterize unknown systems in time-variant environments. The main objective of this approach is to meet a difficult comprise: maximum convergence speed with maximum accuracy. Each application requires a certain approach which determines the filter structure, the cost function to minimize the estimation error, the adaptive algorithm, and other parameters; and each selection involves certain cost in computational terms, that in any case should consume less time than the time required by the application working in real-time....
This project has its origins in a conference on ecosystem services that Gretchen
Daily of the Stanford Biology Department, Geoff Heal of the Columbia Business
School, and Peter Raven, Director of the Missouri Botanical Gardens,
organized at the Gardens in 1998. Having become intrigued by the concept of
ecosystem services, which at the time was still relatively new even within ecological
economics, the three of us eagerly attended and immediately noticed
that, besides J. B., only one other lawyer was present in the audience of more
than a hundred.
A well-resourced support structure was established to administer the
programme. facilitate dialoguc, hold confidential data securely, and provide
data analysis. Members provided data for the anonymous databases about their
practices and about specific project results, and tirst-hand case studies for
discussion at workshops. They discovered, shared and created both tacit and
explicit knowledge through the fomial programme and through informal

The fact that entrepreneurs may insulate workers’ earnings from shocks in the prod-
uct market has long been recognised as an important determinant of the dynamics
of wages. The rationale for such an insurance ultimately rests on the concept of
implicit labour contracts originated by Azariadis (1975), Baily (1974) and Gordon
(1974). A central empirical implication is that contract wages may entail implicit
payments of insurance premiums by workers in favourable states of nature and the
receipt of indemnities in unfavourable states....
Particularly for rented apartments, key control by apartment management is an
important issue. Large jury awards have been made to victims of crimes in
apartments because of negligent key control and use of a master key.
A resident gives up some rights when they move into a multi-residential property. In
most cases, the resident, per written agreement, cannot add or replace the lock on
their door unless management is given an extra key. By doing this, the management
assumes the responsibility of and legal liability for key control.
In addition McQueen and Vorkink (2004) are able to reproduce GARCH volatility using a
preference-based model with time-varying sensitivity to news. In a related paper, Vanden (2005)
develops a model where the representative agent exhibits a utility function with several risk aversion
regimes, which in equilibrium leads to volatility regimes and volatility clustering.
Whether we get forms with extensive clarity by use of Baumgarten’s aesthetic considerations can not
be answered conclusively on these cases, because much indicate that it has given some vague ideas
when students encounter these considerations during evaluations, but without putting them into real use
in their leading feature or as a guidelines in the design process.
However, to the question: How can designers formulate aesthetic considerations which communicate a
clear message to other professionals? an obvious answer is to make use of Baumgarten’s aesthetic
The theoretical approaches described above were developed without reference to
empirical findings. Initial examinations of empirical health trends indicated that
the trends differed when different aspects of health were examined and that some
indicators showed improving health and some deteriorating health. For instance,
Verbrugge (76) noted that from 1972 to 1981 there were increases in reported
disease presence and disability, yet improvements in self-reported health.
An important feature in many countries is the role of securitization in the lending and housing
prices boom and burst. At the macroeconomic level, the dynamics of the relationship between
lending, housing prices and securitization have been largely unexplored although a rising
interest has recently emerged with the financial crisis.
In Austria, particulate matter is measured in agreement with national legislation as Total Suspended
Particulate (TSP) at more than 110 sites, whereas PM10 measurements are not yet available. It was
assumed that ambient air TSP levels can be attributed to the contribution of local sources and regional
background concentrations. Both of them were modelled separately. The starting point for the
modelling of local contributions was the availability of a spatially disaggregated emission inventory
for nitrogen oxides (NOx).
Our overarching thesis in this article is that organizations voluntarily adopting environmental and
social policies represent a fundamentally distinct type of the modern corporation that is characterized by a
governance structure that takes into account the environmental and social performance of the company, in
addition to financial performance, a long-term approach towards maximizing inter-temporal profits, and
an active stakeholder management process.

The mission of the RAND Institute for Civil Justice is to improve private and public
decisionmaking on civil legal issues by supplying policymakers and the public with the results of
objective, empirically based, analytic research. The ICJ facilitates change in the civil justice system
by analyzing trends and outcomes, identifying and evaluating policy options, and bringing
together representatives of different interests to debate alternative solutions to policy problems.
