An Empirical Investigation of International Consumer Market Segmentation Decisions They may also be more effective at exerting voice to manage agent
behavior, even without the exit option that school choice policies provide (Hirschman,
1970). Finally, student composition may operate as an employment amenity for teachers and
administrators, reducing the salaries that the school must pay and increasing the quality of
teachers that can be hired for any fixed salary (Antos and Rosen, 1975).
AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION OF TURNOVER INTENTIONS OF INTERNAL AUDITORS Amenities could either increase or reduce the
extent of effectiveness sorting relative to this pure case, though the latter seems more likely.22
If, as the hedonics literature implies, schools are one of the more important determinants of
neighborhood desirability (see, e.g., Reback, 2001;
We investigate the empirical behavior of ngram discounts within and across domains. When a language model is trained and evaluated on two corpora from exactly the same domain, discounts are roughly constant, matching the assumptions of modified Kneser-Ney LMs. However, when training and test corpora diverge, the empirical discount grows essentially as a linear function of the n-gram count. We adapt a Kneser-Ney language model to incorporate such growing discounts, resulting in perplexity improvements over modified Kneser-Ney and Jelinek-Mercer baselines. ...
We describe a corpus-based investigation of proposals in dialogue. First, we describe our DR/compliant coding scheme and report our inter-coder reliability results. Next, we test several hypotheses about what constitutes a well-formed proposal. 1 Introduction we report our findings .on tracking agreement. 2 Tracking Agreement Our corpus consists of 24 computer-mediated dialogues 1 in which two participants collaborate on a simple task of buying furniture for the living and dining rooms of a house (a variant of the task in (Walker, 1993)). ...
AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING (ERP) SYSTEMS, AS ASSESSED BY MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTANTS This tendency is at the core of my empirical strategy. To clarify it, I present next to a
simulation exercise that demonstrates the impact of market structure (J) on effectiveness
sorting under different assumptions about the importance of peer group to parental
preferences (δ), and thus about the stickiness of residential assignments.
PLANNING AN INTERNATIONAL AUDIT: AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION OF INTERNAL AUDITOR JUDGEMENT
With nearly as long a pedigree is the idea that these family background effects may
operate above the individual level. The school-level association between average student
background and average performance is typically much stronger than is the same association
at the individual level.
This dissertation empirically investigates the potential lead lag relationship between spot and future markets in three South East Asian countries, namely Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. It attempts to prove whether the lead–lag relationship exist between the two markets in each country individually and whether future market returns lead spot market returns in these countries.
Multiple studies have attempted to estimate the cost to major weapon system programs of complying with acquisition-related statutes and regulations. Most have investigated the cost of compliance only at the contractor level, though program offices, the Services, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense would also incur such
This paper investigates two elements of Maximum Entropy tagging: the use of a correction feature in the Generalised Iterative Scaling (Gis) estimation algorithm, and techniques for model smoothing. We show analytically and empirically that the correction feature, assumed to be required for the correctness of GIS, is unnecessary. We also explore the use of a Gaussian prior and a simple cutoff for smoothing. The experiments are performed with two tagsets: the standard Penn Treebank POS tagset and the larger set of lexical types from Combinatory Categorial Grammar. ...
The Effectiveness of Antidumping Measures under the Byrd Amendment: Some Empirical Evidence for Catfish includes Imperfect Competition in Agricultural International Trade, Vietnamese catfish industry globalizes, Antidumping measurement – definition and investigation process.
We empirically investigate the relation between certain corporate governance
mechanisms and the likelihood of a company having a serious accounting
problem, as evidenced by a misstatement of its earnings.
Most of us spend a good part of our days either reading or writing, so it is
surprising that the psychological study of these processes is a relative late
comer. The investigation of learning processes began with memorizing lists
of nonsense syllables and running rats down mazes, not with what we do
everyday—reading all kinds of things. The study of thinking started with
puzzles of various kinds, not with the kind of inferences that are made in
reading. The reason is, of course, obvious: Investigators were put off by the
daunting complexity of studying discourse comprehension.
Previous research provides evidence for a conceptual distinction between self-assessed and objective knowledge, and relatively little is known about the relationship between knowledge and information search. The current research provides empirical evidence for differentiating the two knowledge types. Furthermore, it suggests that the relative effects of the two types of knowledge on pre-purchase information search depend on the type of information source.
In Japan, credit ratings issued by Designated Rating Agencies (DRA) are used to estimate
market risks and counterparty risks for the purpose of calculating the capital adequacy ratios
for securities companies.
Japan also noted that for calculating the capital adequacy ratios
for banks and other deposit-taking institutions, credit ratings issued by ECAIs are used
subject to the Financial Services Agency (JFSA) ordinance under the Banking Act.
This book provides the state of the art of the investigation and the in-depth analysis of hydraulic conductivity from the theoretical to semi-empirical models perspective as well as policy development associated with management of land resources emanating from drainage-problem soils. A group of international experts contributed to the development of this book. It is envisaged that this thought provoking book will excite and appeal to academics, engineers, researchers and University students who seek to explore the breadth and in-depth knowledge about hydraulic conductivity....
The current status of studies of online shopping attitudes and behavior is investigated through an analysis of 35 empirical articles found in nine primary Information Systems (IS) journals and three major IS conference proceedings. A taxonomy is developed based on our analysis. A conceptual model of online shopping is presented and discussed in light of existing empirical studies. Areas for further research are discussed.
Different PHI functions give rise to specific policy challenges. Primary PHI markets often create
access-related challenges, especially for high-risk and vulnerable groups, where they represent the sole
form of cover for some population groups.15 Where public and private delivery systems are linked to
different funding sources, as in systems with duplicate private health insurance, differences in access to
care, choice levels and utilisation patterns occur between individuals with and without private insurance.
How can doctrines be made intelligible within the context of our mod-
ern world? This book intends to investigate, and to throw new light upon,
Lonergan’s response to this challenge in his presentation of the functional
specialty, systematics, within his Method in Theology.
The sample of banks includes FDIC-insured commercial banks with total assets
greater than $300 million as of March 1996. Of these institutions, banks that have no
commercial and industrial loans are excluded. The sample ranges from 942 banks in March
of 1996 to 467 banks in December of 2004. Institutions that are liquidated during the sample
period are included in the sample before liquidation and excluded from the sample for the
periods after liquidation. Banks that merge during the sample period are included in the
