  • The initial stage of knowledge-telling consists of creating or retrieving what the author wants to say and then generating a text to say it. The author is not entirely egocentric in knowledge-telling and can begin to take into account the reader's needs. Specifically, by the time children are beginning to write they realize that another person's thoughts about the world may differ from their own. By about the age of 4, children have acquired a theory of mind that allows them to take another's perspective (Wellman, 1990; Wellman, Cross, & Watson, 2001).

  • The dominant nature of this long-short or spread trading activity explains why hedge funds do so well in market downturns (i.e. it is not directional). But it also explains why leverage needs to be relatively high: investing in a strong stock market generates strong returns, while investing in a low-risk spread in a long-short strategy does not. So the trade has to be levered up a number of times in order for the spread trades to generate competitive returns (while keeping the benefit of avoiding directional risk in the market).

It is imperative that testing be done in a coordinated manner, with the knowledge and consent of appropriate officials. Ensure that security policy accurately reflects the organization’s needs. The policy must be used as a baseline for comparison with testing results. Without appropriate policy, the usefulness of testing is drastically limited.

The SQL Server product group at that time had taken on the ambitious task of redesigning the SQL Server code for their next release (SQL Server 7.0). Ease of use and elimination of knobs was a driving force for their design of SQL Server 7.0. At the same time, in the database research world, data analysis and mining techniques had become popular. In starting the AutoAdmin project, we hoped to leverage some of...

  • All this was on my mind when the Secretary-General presented me with an argument to which there was no convincing rebuttal: No other political leader had become Prime Minister with a background of several years of political struggle, nationally and internationally, as an environment minister. This gave some hope that the environment was not destined to remain a side issue in central, political decision making. In the final analysis, I decided to accept the challenge. The challenge of facing the future, and of safeguarding the interests of coming generations.

  • Remember, not everyone should buy a long-term care insurance policy. For some, a policy is affordable and worth the cost. For others, the cost is too great, or the policy they can afford doesn’t offer enough benefits to make it worthwhile. You should not buy long-term care insurance if the only way you can afford to pay for it is by not paying other important bills. Look closely at your needs and resources, and discuss it with a family member to decide if long-term care insurance is right for you. (There are several worksheets at the back of this book that will help you as you think...

In other jurisdictions, additional governance standards - over and above the governance code - have been introduced as part of the listing requirements. For instance, the Stockholm Stock Exchange and the TSX both impose such standards (e.g.

Microscopy is a rapid method but lacks sufficient sensitivity and does not distinguish between different species of mycobacteria. The sensitivity of microscopy is often not more than 25-40% as compared to culture, but under ideal conditions, it is possible to achieve a rate of 60-70%.

For example, management at the lowest appropriate level should be pursued through the identification of the lowest appropriate level for all identified key functions, irrespective of the present level of management. For some functions, the lowest appropriate level is a local authority or unit, while for other functions it is a central authority (e.g. Case Study I, India).
