  • Steam - The Energy Fluid It is useful to introduce the topic of steam by considering its many uses and benefits, before entering an overview of the steam plant or any technical explanations. Steam has come a long way from its traditional associations with locomotives and the Industrial Revolution. Steam today is an integral and essential part of modern technology. Without it, our food, textile, chemical, medical, power, heating and transport industries could not exist or perform as they do.

  • carbon dioxide recovery systems In the fermentation process, the yeast feeds on the wort to produce carbon dioxide and alcohol. This carbon dioxide can be recovered with closed fermentation tanks and used later in the carbonation process. The fermentation process generates about 8-10 lbs/barrel wort (3-4 kg CO2/hl) (Lom and Associates, 1998). Typical CO2 scrubber operations require 2 kg of water per kg of carbon dioxide (Dell, 2001). A large brewery can become self-sufficient for CO2 if a well-designed plant is installed to recover CO2 from fermentation. The U.S.

  • In my forty years within the natural health movement, I’ve been blessed to witness the living food lifestyle spread its wings and soar. When I started the Hippocrates Health Institute with Dr. Ann Wigmore in the 1960s, “raw” and “living” were not words commonly associated with the way we eat. I developed a living foods program, a radically new paradigm at the time, which demonstrated unquestionable healing powers. One by one people would arrive at the Institute with grave illnesses and depart revitalized by the simple preparations created from the uncooked bounty of nature....

  • Making microsystems at a scale level of few microns is called micromachining. Micromachining is used to fabricate three-dimensional microstructures. It is the foundation of a technology called Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS). MEMS usually consist of three major parts: sensors, actuators, and an associate electronic circuitry that acts as the brain and controller of the whole system.

  • Recent experiences from carrying out Design for Assembly (DFA) and Design for Manufacture (DFM) product studies in industry have reinforced the authors’ belief that consideration of manufacturing problems at the design stage is the major means available for improving product quality, reducing manufacturing costs and increasing productivity. In the second edition, as well as providing further information to help select processes for components and the joining of components, we have included data on assembly process selection and costing.

  • Over the past decade, there has been a prolific increase in the research, development and commercialisation of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and their associated technologies (see Figure 1). This rise has been a result of a number of contributing factors, including continued miniaturisation (leading towards an era of truly ‘pervasive’ and ‘invisible’ computing); low-power circuits, devices and computation (for example, the ultra-low-power sleep states now found in microcontrollers); and efficient short-range communication (such as ZigBee and Bluetooth).

Although there have been a number of excellent books written on the subject they are now either out of date or too specialist in content to fulfil the requirements of an undergraduate textbook.

  • Since the First International Congress on Liquid Crystals (Lcs), held at Kent State University, OH, USA, in 1965, the implications of these systems associated with various aspects of telecommunications, laser, display, automobile, aerospace technologies, thermo-optics, medicine and biology have been the subject of considerable debate among researchers, scientists and engineers. Indeed, LCs, being a unique mesomorphic phase of matter, combine properties of both solids (long-range orientation order, manifestations of Bragg diffraction, etc.) and liquids (fluidity, viscosity, etc.).

  • With global populations on the rise and the increasing threat associated with climate change, the need for the development of low emission energy resources is clear. Geothermal energy, which originates from the underground heat of the earth (Sankaran, 2002), has the advantage of being a low-emission, baseload energy resource. Unlike other alternative energy resources, geothermal energy production does not fluctuate with time of day or season.

  • The world's reliance on existing sources of energy and their associated detrimental impacts on the environment- whether related to poor air or water quality or scarcity, impacts on sensitive ecosystems and forests and land use - have been well documented and articulated over the last three decades. What is needed by the world is a set of credible energy solutions that would lead us to a balance between economic growth and a sustainable environment.

  • Brewer, Minton, and Moser (2000), we evaluate an equation relating the determinants of C&I lending and the impact of derivatives on C&I lending activity. The major finding in this study is that the interest-rate derivatives allow commercial banks to lessen their systematic exposure to changes in interest rates, which enables banks to increase their lending activities without increasing the total risk level faced by the banks. This consequently increases the banks’ abilities to provide more intermediation services.

  • PHOTOSYNTHESIS PROVIDES the organic building blocks that plants (and nearly all other life) depend on. Respiration, with its associated carbon metabolism, releases the energy stored in carbon compounds in a controlled manner for cellular use. At the same time it generates many carbon precursors for biosynthesis. In the first part of this chapter we will review respiration in its metabolic context, emphasizing the interconnections and the special features that are peculiar to plants.
