Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. Biology is a vast subject containing many subdivisions, topics, and disciplines.
One of the outstanding problems of the biologist, whether he be beginning student or specialists, is that of understanding technical terms. The best way to understand and remember technical terms is to understand first their component parts, or roots. This dictionary has been designed primarily to meet the needs of the beginning student, the medical student, and the taxonomist, but it should be of value to all biologists.
Biological Risk Engineering — Infection Control and Decontamination provides a compendium of biological risk management information. Biological risk is of concern to us all. The biological risks we face vary and include biological contamination within our environment and, more personally, biological risk to ourselves through disease or the potential for disease.
This book deals with a subset of biological risk agents defined as bacteria, molds, yeasts, viruses, and prions. The term biologicals refers to these agents.

The Penguin Dictionary of Biology defines some 6,000 terms relating to this rich, complex, and constantly expanding subject?from amino acids, bacteria, and the cell cycle to X-ray diffraction, Ychromosomes, and zygotes. Long established as the definitive single-volume source, the dictionary has now been extensively updated for its eleventh edition.

Although technical advances have resulted in marked improvements in the ability to diag‐
nose and surgically treat primary and metastatic brain tumors, the incidence and mortality
rates of these tumors is increasing. Particularly affected are young adults and the elderly. The
present standard treatment modalities following surgical resection including cranial irradia‐
tion and systemic or local chemotherapy each have limited efficacy and serious adverse side
Some policies may pay for care in any state-licensed facility. Others only
pay for care in some state-licensed facilities, such as a licensed nursing
facility. Still others list the types of facilities where services will not be
covered, which may include state-licensed facilities. (For example, some
places that care for elderly people are referred to as homes for the aged,
rest homes or personal care homes, and are often not covered by long-
term care policies). Some policies may list specific points about the kinds of
facilities they will cover.
Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field which addresses biological problems using computational techniques, and makes the rapid organization and analysis of biological data possible. The field may also be referred to as computational biology, and can be defined as, "conceptualizing biology in terms of molecules and then applying informatics techniques to understand and organize the information associated with these molecules, on a large scale.
Chapter 1 - Introduction: Themes in the study of life. In this chapter, you should now be able to: Briefly describe the unifying themes that characterize the biological sciences; distinguish among the three domains of life, and the eukaryotic kingdoms; distinguish between the following pairs of terms: discovery science and hypothesis-based science, quantitative and qualitative data, inductive and deductive reasoning, science and technology.
The aim of this book is to make Australian herons, egrets and bitterns better
understood and more appreciated by bird watchers, students and indeed anyone
who has a particular admiration for these striking members of our avian fauna
and a concern for their long-term survival. Unless otherwise indicated, in what
follows ‘heron’ will collectively refer to all three of these members of the family
Ardeidae. This book is certainly overdue.
We characterized the expression and functional properties of the ADP-sensitive P2Y1 and P2Y12 nucleotide receptors in glioma C6 cells cultured
in medium devoid of serum for up to 96 h. During this long-term serum
starvation, cell morphology changed from fibroblast-like flat to round, the
adhesion pattern changed, cell-cycle arrest was induced,

In this paper, we propose an approach for identifying curatable articles from a large document set. This system considers three parts of an article (title and abstract, MeSH terms, and captions) as its three individual representations and utilizes two domain-specific resources (UMLS and a tumor name list) to reveal the deep knowledge contained in the article. An SVM classifier is trained and cross-validation is employed to find the best combination of representations. The experimental results show overall high performance. ...
