  • Preparations derived from Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegl. mycelium are worldwide used as dietary supplements containing compounds active as immune system enhancers, demonstrating chemopreventive and anticancer activity. L. edodes mycelium enriched with organic forms of selenium like selenized yeast possess putative, higher cancer preventive properties. The objective of this study was to test the effect of enrichment in selenium on antioxidant, reducing and free radical scavenging activity of water and alcohol extracts from mycelium of L. edodes (Berk.).

  • Polysaccharide fractions isolated from Lentinula edodes fruitbodies and mycelium demonstrate strong immunomodulating, antioxidant and anticancer activity. We hypothesized, that polysaccharide fractions enriched in selenium would possess higher biological activity than non-enriched fractions, currently used to treat cancer. The first goal of this study was to isolate selenium (Se)-enriched polysaccharide fractions of different molecular weight from L. edodes mycelium cultivated under the submerged conditions in Se-enriched medium, and to investigate their monosaccharide composition....

  • Via enrichment procedures carried out on a dioxin contaminated sediment sample from lotus pond at Danang airport, a microbial community assigned as DN553 with high capability of carbazol degradation was established. Analyses of community structure by using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of 16S rDNA fragments indicated that Achromobacter and Alcaligenes species dominated in this enrichment culture.

  • We isolated a cholesterol-enriched membrane subpopulation from the so-called lipid raft fractions of Jurkat T-cells by taking advantage of its selective binding to a cholesterol-binding probe, BCh. The BCh-bound mem-brane subpopulation has a much higher cholesterol⁄phospholipid (C⁄P) molar ratio (1.0) than the BCh-unbound population in raft fractions (0.3). It contains not only the raft markers GM1 and flotillin, but also some T-cell receptor (TCR) signalling molecules, including Lck, Fyn and LAT. ...

  • The current volume entitled Protein Purification is designed to facilitate rapid access to valuable information about various methodologies. It aims as well to provide an overview of state-of-art techniques for the purification, analysis and quantification of proteins in complex samples using different enrichment strategies.Protein purification is a series of processes intended to isolate a single type of protein from a complex mixture. Protein purification is vital for the characterization of the function, structure and interactions of the protein of interest....

  • This book takes a fresh look at programs for advanced studies for high school students in the United States, with a particular focus on the Advanced Placement and the International Baccalaureate programs, and asks how advanced studies can be significantly improved in general. It also examines two of the core issues surrounding these programs: they can have a profound impact on other components of the education system and participation in the programs has become key to admission at selective institutions of higher education.

  • A library of random peptide sequences was used to select peptides that inhibit an anti-idiotypic catalytic Ig, immuno-globulin (IgG) 9G4H9, withab-lactamase-like activity. This library displays cyclic heptapeptides on the surface of bac-teriophagesand representsacollectionofupto4.5·10 9 peptides. The first selection step aimed at enriching the lib-rary in species that bind to the whole Ig molecule. The sec-ond stepwas todiscriminate peptides that bind topart of the molecule other than the active site. Selected peptides were then screened by surface plasmon resonance analysis.

  • Testican-1, a secreted proteoglycan enriched in brain, has a single thyropin domain that is highly homologous to domains previously shown to inhibit cysteine proteases. We demonstrate that purified recombinant human testican-1 is a strong competitive inhibitor of the lysosomal cysteine pro-tease, cathepsin L,withaKiof 0.7nM, but it does not inhibit the structurally related lysosomal cysteine protease cathep-sin B. Testican-1 inhibition of cathepsin L is independent of its chondroitin sulfate chains and is effective at both pH 5.5 and7.2.

  • Cold seeps occur in geologically active and passive continental margins, where pore waters enriched in methane are forced upward through the sediments by pressure gradients. The advective supply of methane leads to dense microbial communities with high metabolic rates. Anaerobic methane oxidation presumably coupled to sulphate reduction facilitates formation of carbonates and, in many places, generates extremely high concentrations of hydrogen sulphide in pore waters.

  • In spiders soluble proteins are converted to form insoluble silk fibres, stronger than steel. The final fibre product has longbeen the subject of study;however, little is knownabout the conversion process in the silk-producing gland of the spider. Here we describe a study of the conversion of the soluble form of the major spider-silk protein, spidroin, directly extracted from the silk gland, to ab-sheet enriched stateusing circular dichroism(CD) spectroscopy.

  • Csk-binding protein⁄phosphoprotein associated with glycosphingolipid-enriched domains is a transmembrane adaptor protein primarily involved in negative regulation of T-cell activation by recruitment of C-terminal Src kinase (Csk), a protein tyrosine kinase which represses Src kinase activity through C-terminal phosphorylation. Recruitment of Csk occurs via SH2-domain binding to PAG pTyr317, thus, the interaction is highly dependent on phosphorylation performed by the Src family kinase Fyn, which docks onto PAG using a dual-domain binding mode involving both SH3- and SH2-domains of Fyn....

Grant support should also pay careful attention to projects or public activity rooted in prior engagement or historical activity – activity that has some legacy and can now be expanded or made into something more sustainable.

Even though much of the quantitative component is automated and enriched by a tremendous amount of data, much of the critical buying and selling decisions are based on individualized, qualitative judgments. The actual use of formal quantitative portfolio models vary from institution to institution. At one extreme, typified by rigorous investment constraints, the model recommendations are followed precisely.
