  • The first edition of Toxicological Chemistry (1989) was written to bridge the gap between toxicology and chemistry. It defined toxicological chemistry as the science that deals with the chemical nature and reactions of toxic substances, their origins and uses, and the chemical aspects of their exposure, transformation, and elimination by biological systems. It emphasized the chemical formulas, structures, and reactions of toxic substances. The second edition of Toxicological Chemistry (1992) was significantly enlarged and increased in scope compared to the first edition.

  • Chlorinated paraffins are one of the last classes of chlorinated compounds that are still being produced worldwide and used in high quantities in many applications. They are particularly used in cutting oils in the metal industry, but also as lubricants, plasticizers, flame retardants and as additives in adhesives, rubber, paints and sealants. This volume covers the state-of-the-art of methods for the synthesis and analysis of chlorinated paraffins. Experts in the field provide an overview of their worldwide occurrence and utilization and describe their toxicological properties.

  • Monitoring the environment for metals has become a topic of considerable importance, not only to those industries emitting heavy metals but also to surveillance agencies and other organizations assessing the impact of metals on the environment. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive and easyto- read text for anyone working in the environmental analytical chemistry arena and to provide essential information to consultants and regulators about analytical and quality control procedures helpful in their evaluation and decision-making procedures.

  • Much new material has been added to this second edition. Besides a totally new chapter on radionuclides, the text has been reorganized and updated with separate chapters on metals, light nonaqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs), dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs), and biodegradation. Also, some end-of-chapter exercises have been added. The dictionary of inorganic pollutants has been enlarged and some important organic pollutants added.

  • This is a very different risk assessment book. Many risk assessment books target risk assessment practitioners exclusively, providing them with greater technical insights and complex methodologies to aid in professional practice. Other risk assessment books provide brief overviews of the risk assessment process and technical inputs for a lay audience.

  • This book stems from the author’s experience with a variety of problems on the fate, distribution, and toxicity of organic compounds in the aquatic environment. It became increasingly clear that the procedures for investigating these problems crossed the traditional boundaries of organic and analytical chemistry, microbiology, and biology, and after many years this resulted in the idea of selecting the relevant aspects of these and writing the present book

  • Colloid and surface chemistry occupy a paradoxical position among the topics of physical chemistry. These are areas which have traditionally been considered part of physical chemistry and are currently enjoying more widespread application than ever due to their relevance to environmental and biological problems. At the same time, however, colloid and surface chemistry have virtually disappeared from physical chemistry courses. These topics are largely absent from the contemporary general chemistry course as well.

  • The environmental legislation contained in the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 set the stage for green chemistry. Environmental concerns in research and industry are increasing with more and more pressure to reduce the number of pollutants produced. Green chemistry, environmentally benign chemistry and sustainable chemistry involve the design of chemical products and processes that eliminates the use and generation of hazardous substances.
