  • International research on natural resource management advances in impact assessment Increased concern about the environmental and natural resource implications of agriculture has given rise to an emphasis on research that calls attention to these issues in developing countries. National and international agricultural research systems, including the research Centres under the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), have intensified research on natural resource management (NRM) both in terms of budget allocation and priority setting.

  • My interest in environmental pollution control microbiology began at MIT in 1948 when I realized that very little was known about this vital area of sanitary engineering technology. I became a serious student of environmental pollution control microbiology in 1950 when I began research on the microbiology and the biochemistry of floe-forming bacteria in activated sludge. I must admit that environmental pollution control microbiology has been my area of technical specialization since 1950. It has been a most interesting experience that I have never regretted.

  • The contents of this book are based loosely on presentations at a special symposium, “Application of Interface Science to Environmental Pollution Control,” held as part of the ACS National Meeting in Chicago, August 26–30, 2001. This symposium offered an opportunity for researchers from a range of disciplines to discuss the role of interface science in environmental remediation. The development of an archival book based on this meeting is a timely contribution to a burgeoning area of research that is now attracting the attention of a diverse research community.

  • In the 1980s and early 1990s, I had the opportunity to observe a number of development projects in the Amazon region of Brazil. Some of the projects were designed to improve the life of colonists in the region, while others were focused on management of natural resources. All the projects were “top down” in the sense that project design and direction were carried out by high-level corporate or government sponsors at headquarters far removed from the affected areas.

  • As a result of the gloomy economic climate in Europe brought about by the ongoing crisis affecting all enterprises (particularly SMEs) in France, the French government has recently decided to create different poles of innovation and research associated to the activities of enterprises. The objective is to propose new ideas for helping these enterprises to be more efficient and able to resist the threat to their existence from globalisation. One of the difficulties of these enterprises is that they find it difficult to penetrate the European market and export their products.

  • In 2001 I was contacted by a consortium of research institutions and wind energy interests with a request to provide some background information on the operational characteristics of acoustic radars or SODARs. The consortium partners had set up and been funded for an European EU project to evaluate SODARs as a tool in monitoring wind flows at wind turbine sites. They felt reasonably confident in their knowledge of SODARs and had purchased some instruments, but wanted to be able to consult on any more complex issues which arose.

  • The products of science and technology influence the lives of all citizens, including young adults. New means of communication and transportation, new ways of doing work and pursuing recreation, new foods and new medicines arrive almost daily. Science also engenders new ways of looking at the world and at other citizens. Likewise, science can raise concerns about moral and ethical values. Dealing with all such changes requires some resiliency.

  • Since the publication of G. P. Lilley’s reference work Information Sources in Agriculture and Food Science in 1981, we have been witness to incredible changes both in the area of agricultural research and in our ability to disseminate the results of that research. Advances have been made in the areas of plant and animal genetics, in animal and human nutrition and health, and in our understanding of the effects of human and climatic actions on the land and its natural resources.

  • Environmental health decision making can be a complex undertaking, as there is the need to navigate and find balance among three core elements: science, policy, and the needs of the American public. Much of environmental health decision making started in the 1950s and 1960s and was focused on health effects of simple environmental exposures. However, scientific knowledge has rapidly changed as new technologies and new insights into the complexity of environment–health interactions have emerged.

Moreover, proponents of effluent fees received a receptive hearing in the political arena. The Environmental Pollution Panel of the President’s Science Advisory Committee recommended in 1965 “that careful study be given to tax-like systems in which all polluters would be subject to ‘effluent charges’ in proportion to their contribution to pollution ….
