and Commerce, the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, and
the House Subcommittee on International Development, Finance,
and Monetary Policy requested an assessment of energy and environmental
technology transfer to Central Europe and the former Soviet
Union. The intent was to determine how U.S. energy technology can help
resolve the economic and environmental problems in the region....
This work inevitably sprang out of our environmental biotechnology modules at
the University of Durham, but it is not intended to be just another ‘book of the
course’. Though it is clearly rooted in these origins, it reflects our wider, and
rather varied, experiences of the field. In many respects, we have been fortunate;
teaching has undoubtedly drawn on the ‘theory’, while our own consultancy has
tended to focus us on the ‘application’.

There is a new era of global environmental factors that needs to be

Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are part of a recent agricultural trend toward
large-scale, corporate-owned and managed livestock production. A far cry from the traditional
family farm, CAFOs have lowered prices and increased production—but at a cost. While some of
