  • Access to safe drinking water and sanitation is a basic necessity. However, such access is highly variable around the world and in particular in Africa, Asia and South America. Much progress still remains to be made in infrastructure improvements and poverty reduction. A recent World Bank report, for example, noted that more than 100 million people in the Latin American region alone lack access to potable water and adequate sanitation systems. Compounding the issue of water availability is contamination of water supplies and the lack of wastewater treatment facilities.

  • The new antigen receptor (IgNAR) from sharks is a disul-phide bonded dimer of two protein chains, each containing one variable and five constant domains, and functions as an antibody. In order to assess the antigen-binding capabilities of isolated IgNAR variable domains (VNAR),we have con-structed anin vitro library incorporating synthetic CDR3 regions of 15–18 residues in length.

Plot the residuals against the predicted values, against the predictor variables, and as a function of the time order in which themeasurements were made

  • There are two main reasons why the chemical process industry should be motivated to reduce energy consumption and CO 2 emissions: rising concerns in companies, the public and scientifi c community about climate change or global warming, and the increasing fraction of energy in manufacturing costs. ‘ Climate change ’ [1] in this context, means a change of climate, which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and which is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods....

  • Organic pollutants cause several environmental problems if discharged to air or water body. The occurrence of organic pollutants in the ecosystem, their risk and removal methods are very important issues .This book deals with several aspects of organic pollutants, especially in the light of organic pollutants monitoring, risk assessment as well as the practical application of different techniques for removing it from the environment.

  • With advances in the management of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) the incidence of mechanical complications continues to decline. Nevertheless, when they occur, unfortunately, despite similar advances and growing experiences in the surgical management of these problems, morbidity and mortality remain high. Post-myocardial infarction ventricular septal defects (PI-VSD) have fascinated and challenged clinicians for years.

  • When planning how to reduce the threat of global warming and how to adapt to it, a very important piece of information is how intense the change will be. That implies estimating the trends of future concentrations of greenhouse gasses, and the potential future changes in temperature, precipitation, storm events and other climatic variables. These predictions are important not only to estimate the magnitude of the changes, but also to determine the uncertainty surrounding them.

  • Wastes are very process-specific but the key pollutants can be derived from knowledge of: the process, construction materials, corrosion / erosion mechanisms and maintenance materials. Waste audits are used to gather information on the source, composition, quantity and variability of all wastes. Waste prevention typically involves preventing the arising of waste at source, minimising the arisings and recycling any waste that is generated.

  • This textbook provides study materials for the participants of the course named Multivariate Analysis of Ecological Data that we teach at our university for the third year. Material provided here should serve both for the introductory and the advanced versions of the course. We admit that some parts of the text would profit from further polishing, they are quite rough but we hope in further improvement of this text.

  • A common approach to adjusting for seasonal and long-term trends is to use semiparametric models which incorporate a smooth function of time. The use of nonparametric smoothing in time series models of air pollution and health was suggested in Schwartz (1994a), where generalized additive Poisson models were used with LOESS smooths of time, temperature, dewpoint temperature and PM10. This approach can be thought of as regressing residuals from the smoothed dependent variable on residuals from the smoothed regressors.

  • This book highlights the important need for more efficient and environmentally sound combustion technologies that utilise renewable fuels to be continuously developed and adopted. The central theme here is two-fold: internal combustion engines and fuel solutions for combustion systems. Internal combustion engines remain as the main propulsion system used for ground transportation, and the number of successful developments achieved in recent years is as varied as the new design concepts introduced....

  • There are three sets of examples to discuss. They concern the way modern theories of economic growth view fertility and natural resources, the way population growth and economic stress in poor countries are studied by environmental and resource economists, and the way development economists accomodate environmental stress in their analysis of contemporary poverty. The examples are discussed in the next three sub-sections. If I grumble, there is cause.

  • To estimate equation (5) we have to take into account the potential endogeneity of financial performance and board appointment decisions. Furthermore, including the lagged dependent variable as an independent variable makes the fixed effects estimator not only biased, but also inconsistent. To overcome this problem an instrumental variables (IV) estimator could be used. However, appropriate governance instruments are not easy to find.

  • To construct the linked employer-employee data set, we first select establish- ments from the establishment panel data. From the available waves, we use the years 1995 to 2005. Since information on a number of variables, such as investment expenditures and sales are gathered retrospectively for the preceding year, we lose information on the last wave. Moreover, we restrict our sample to western Ger- man establishments from the mining and manufacturing sector with at least two employees.
