  • The chemical process industries (CPI), petroleum and allied industries apply physical as well as chemical methods to the conversion of raw feedstock materials into salable products. Because of the diversity of products, process conditions and requirements, equipment design is often unique, or case specific. The prime requirement of any piece of equipment is that it performs the function for which it was designed under the intended process operating conditions, and do so in a continuous and reliable manner.

  • All air-handling units (AHUs) and many terminal units, if they are not self-contained, require a source of heating and/or cooling energy. This source is called a central plant, and the means by which thermal energy is transferred between the central plant and the AHU is usually a fluid conveyed through a piping system. The fluids used in HVAC practice are steam, hot or cold water, brine, refrigerant, or a combination of these. The equipment used to generate the thermal energy is described in Chap. 7. In this chapter we discuss the transport systems. ...

  • In most HVAC systems, the final energy transport medium is moist air—a mixture of dry air and water vapor. This is conveyed through filters, heat exchange equipment, ducts, and various terminal devices to the space to be air-conditioned. The power to move the air is supplied by fans. This chapter discusses fans and duct systems, together with related subjects such as grilles, registers, diffusers, dampers, filters, and noise control.

  • HVAC systems are sized to satisfy a set of design conditions, which are selected to generate a maximum load. Because these design conditions prevail during only a few hours each year, the HVAC equipment must operate most of the time at less than rated capacity. The function of the control system is to adjust the equipment capacity to match the load.

  • This chapter covers the actual process of sitting down and designing your OSPF network. The real process of putting the pen to paper and the true process behind it is covered. It is this chapter's intention to take the mystery out of designing any type of network. The concepts and steps discussed have universal application whether your network is BGP or OSPF; of course, the latter is emphasized. Chapter 6, "Advanced OSPF Design Concepts," covered many of the commands necessary for configuring OSPF.

  • During the early years of microprocessor technology, there were few engineers with education and experience in the application of microprocessor technology. Now that microprocessors and microcontrollers have become pervasive in many types of equipment, it has become almost a requirement that many technical people have the ability to use them. Today the microprocessor and the microcontroller have become two of the most powerful tools available to the scientist and engineer.

  • When Val and I decided to collaborate and write the first edition, our goal was to produce an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand, practical text- book stressing hydraulic design, that could be of hands-on use to the pump designer, student, and rotating equipment engineer. Although feed- back from readers indicates that we achieved our desired goal, we did recognize that we had omitted several important topics.

  • I enjoyed reading this book for a number of reasons. One reason is that it addresses high-speed analog design in the context of microwave issues. This is an advanced level book, which should follow courses in basic circuits and transmission lines. Most analog integrated circuit designers in the past worked on applications at a low enough frequency that microwave issues did not arise. As a consequence, they were adept at lumped parameter circuits and often not comfortable with circuits where waves travel in space.

  • Design documents evolve from and include the designer’s calculations, equipment selections, and sketches and are usually presented through formal drawings and specifications. These construction documents are the legal means by which the designer conveys the owner’s expectations to the contractor. The importance of good documentation cannot be overemphasized.
