However, the role of women in the sector has, for a long time, gone unrecognised and their voice is heard rarely among managers, policy makers and legislators.1 The lack of recognition and representation is not only unfair, but it also leads to an incomplete understanding of how the sector as a whole operates and functions.

  • Both the retreat of the glaciers and the rise of oxygen in the ocean may have spurred the rise of the animals. All animals need oxygen to fuel their metabolism and to build their tissues. The low levels of oxygen in the oceans may have made it impossible for the ancestors of animals to evolve into multicellular creatures. If a rise in oxygen opened the door for animal evolution, what pushed the ani- mals through? Part of that answer may lie within the animals themselves—in particular, in the set of genes that control their development.

According to a 2008 Duke University study, about 35 percent of the 25 million people in the United States who are 71 or older either have mild cognitive impairment or dementia.

  • At first glance, the cinema would seem to be remote from the undercover world of the surreptitious observation of an unknowing and unwilling victim. What is seen of the screen is so manifestly shown. But the mass of mainstream film, and the conventions within which it has consciously evolved, portray a hermetically sealed world which unwinds magically, indifferent to the presence of the audience, producing for them a sense of separation and playing on their voyeuristic phantasy.

  • Official policies for SME development can be evaluated against their impact upon enterprise culture, start-up, survival and growth of SMEs, and stakeholder empathy. Each of these criteria feeds off the others. Enterprise culture will be strong where there are high rates of SME growth. Where SMEs are dominant features in the local and regional economic and social environment, stakeholders themselves will be influenced and will adjust their behaviour accordingly.
