Since its introduction in the early 1970s, computed tomography (CT) has become a
robust modality to evaluate extracranial, thoracic, and abdominal vascular distributions.
It has become a gold standard to non-invasively image the aorta, pulmonary arteries,
great vessels, renal and peripheral arteries. However, cardiac anatomy evaluation with
this modality was not possible, due to rapid cardiac motion and slow image acquisition
Excess abdominal fat, assessed by measurement of waist circumference or waist-to-hip ratio, is independently associated with higher risk for diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Measurement of the waist circumference is a surrogate for visceral adipose tissue and should be performed in the horizontal plane above the iliac crest. Cut points that define higher risk for men and women based on ethnicity have been proposed by the International Diabetes Federation (Table 75-3).

Dairy products form the major part of functional foods. To understand their
success it is important to know that milk is a natural and highly nutritive part of a
balanced daily diet. Designing and developing functionality in dairy-based products
simply means modifying and/or enriching the healthy nature of the original base.
This chapter is a brief introduction to the composition of milk and the nature of
fermented milk products. It also gives a few definitions and introduces some of the
functional dairy products on the market.
The First Conference of French-Speaking African Countries on Men’s Participation in
Reproductive Health was held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso from March 30 to April 3,
1998. It was organized to share experiences and lessons learned over the past decade
among African organizations about communicating with men on reproductive health
Bladder, uterine, and rectal prolapse are common sequelae of childbirth.
Sometimes bulging is obvious on initial inspection, but other times it may
only be evident when the patient bears down as if she were attempting to void
and then defecate. The examiner should be appropriately positioned before
undertaking this evaluation, because some women will lose urine with this
maneuver. For many women with prolapse, diagnosis is only possible after a
more detailed gynecologic examination (see Chapters 10 and 14)....
Therapeutic immunosuppression has very broad applications in clinical medicine,
ranging from prevention and treatment of organ and bone marrow transplant
rejection, management of various autoimmune disorders (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis),
skin diseases, allergies and asthma. Whereas traditionally only a small repertoire of
immunosuppressive agents was available for clinical use, recent discoveries have
significantly increased the number of approved agents, resulting in numerous trials to
further evaluate their potential.

When a consumer applies for employment, or for a service that reviews credit histories,
(such as insurance, an apartment rental, utilities, cell phone accounts) these data users
may also request and receive a credit report and/or scores from one or more repositories,
to be used to evaluate the consumer’ s application.

The patient’s history is a critical feature in the evaluation of
suspected or overt heart disease. It includes information
about the present illness, past illnesses, and the patient’s
family. From this information, a chronology of the patient’s
disease process should be constructed. Determining what
information in the history is useful requires a detailed
knowledge of the pathophysiology of cardiac disease. The
effort spent on listening to the patient is time well invested
because the cause of cardiac disease is often discernible from
Instead, this report will describe some of the notable sources and organizers of culturally and
linguistically appropriate information locally and nationally, discuss related cultural competence
issues, and look into some possible ways to increase access to such materials through building
on existing infrastructures. The centerpiece of this project was a focus group and interviews
with professionals particularly interested in linguistic access to care, cultural competence, and
access to information.

Computer-Aided Design and system analysis aim to find mathematical models that allow emulating the behaviour of components and facilities. The high competitiveness in industry, the little time available for product development and the high cost in terms of time and money of producing the initial prototypes means that the computer-aided design and analysis of products are taking on major importance.
The first Environmental Health Criteria (EHC) monograph, on mercury,
was published in 1976 and since that time an ever-increasing number of
assessments of chemical and of physical agents have been produced. In addition,
many EHC monographs have been devoted to evaluating toxicological
methodology, e.g. for genetic, neurotoxic, teratogenic and nephrotoxic
agents. Other publications have been concerned with epidemiological guidelines,
evaluation of short-term tests for carcinogens, biomarkers, effects on
the elderly and so forth....
In our view, the most reliable estimate available is a total value of U.S. corporations
of 1.54 times GNP, or 17.5 times after-tax corporate earnings. This estimate is based on a
detailed study of 135 industrial corporations done by Laurence Sloan and Associates (1936)
at the Standard Statistics Company, a company that later merged with Poor’s Publishing
to become Standard and Poor’s (S&P). The estimate we will use, however, is a total value
of 1.67 times GNP (or 19 times after-tax corporate earnings). This estimate is based on the
price-earnings ratio of the S&P composite stock index.
The purpose of this booklet is to provide an accessible reference of concise information on
common childhood communicable diseases. Each disease is described in detail, including signs
and symptoms, methods of transmission, prevention practices and exclusion policies for
children from the school or day care setting. Tips on the prevention and control of
communicable diseases have been included, as well as information on hand washing,
playground safety, and general sanitation guidelines.
