The toxicological monographs in this volume summarize the safety data on a number of food additives: asparaginase from Aspergillus nigerexpressed in A. niger, calcium lignosulfonate (40 “65), ethyl lauroyl arginate, paprika extract, phospholipase C expressed in Pichia pastoris, phytosterols, phytostanols and their esters, polydimethylsiloxane and steviol glycosides. A monograph on the assessment of dietary exposure to sulfites is also included. Monographs on 10 groups of related flavoring agents evaluated by the Procedure for the Safety Evaluation of Flavouring Agents are also included....
Peripherally Acting Medications Orlistat (Xenical) is a synthetic hydrogenated derivative of a naturally occurring lipase inhibitor, lipostatin, produced by the mold Streptomyces toxytricini. Orlistat is a potent, slowly reversible inhibitor of pancreatic, gastric, and carboxylester lipases and phospholipase A2, which are required for the hydrolysis of dietary fat into fatty acids and monoacylglycerols. The drug acts in the lumen of the stomach and small intestine by forming a covalent bond with the active site of these lipases.
Lifestyle Management Obesity care involves attention to three essential elements of lifestyle: dietary habits, physical activity, and behavior modification. Because obesity is fundamentally a disease of energy imbalance, all patients must learn how and when energy is consumed (diet), how and when energy is expended (physical activity), and how to incorporate this information into their daily life (behavior therapy). Lifestyle management has been shown to result in a modest (typically 3– 5 kg) weight loss compared to no treatment or usual care.
Nutritional Status Assessment Full nutritional status assessment is reserved for seriously ill patients and those at very high nutritional risk when the cause of malnutrition is still uncertain after initial clinical evaluation and dietary assessment. It involves multiple dimensions, including documentation of dietary intake, anthropometric
measurements, biochemical measurements
of blood and urine, clinical
examination, health history, and functional status. For further discussion of nutritional assessment, see Chap. 72.
Physical Activity Therapy Although exercise alone is only moderately effective for weight loss, the combination of dietary modification and exercise is the most effective behavioral approach for the treatment of obesity. The most important role of exercise appears to be in the maintenance of the weight loss. Currently, the minimum public health recommendation for physical activity is 30 min of moderate intensity physical activity on most, and preferably all, days of the week.

In light of the success of viral videos sponsored by big brand
names like Levi's' "Backflip Into Jeans," Gatorade's "Ball
Girl,” and Nike's “Kobe Jumps Over Car,” advertisers and
agencies are evaluating the value of adding viral video to
their online marketing mix.
Faced with a tough economic climate, marketers are
hurriedly seeking new methods to reach web audiences in
the most cost-effective manner. Viral video - which is
generally less expensive to produce and market than
traditional advertising - is now getting its industry close-up.
IHE ACS SYMPOSIUM SERIES was first published in 1974 to provide
a mechanism for publishing symposia quickly in book form. The
purpose of this series is to publish comprehensive books developed
from symposia, which are usually "snapshots in time" of the current
research being done on a topic, plus some review material on the
topic. For this reason, it is necessary that the papers be published as
quickly as possible.
Before a symposium-based book is put under contract, the
proposed table of contents is reviewed for appropriateness to the topic
and for comprehensiveness of the collection.

Abstract We investigated the effects of Antep pistachio on International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) scores, penile color Doppler ultrasound (PCDU) parameters and serum lipid levels in patients with ED. A total of 17 married male patients with ED for at least 12 months were included in this prospective study. Patients were put on a 100 g pistachio nuts diet for 3 weeks. IIEF and PCDU were evaluated before and after the pistachio diet.
Always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. Never disregard professional medical advice or delay in seeking it because of something you have read. Since natural and/or dietary supplements are not FDA approved they must be accompanied by a two-part disclaimer on the product label: that the statement has not been evaluated by FDA and that the product is not intended to "diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease." ...
