  • The Mathematical Sciences Education Board (MSEB) of the National Research Council was established in 1985 to provide national leadership and guidance for policies, programs, and practices supporting the improvement of mathematics education at all levels. Curriculum materials for grades K-12 play a central role in what mathematics topics are taught in our schools, how the topics are sequenced and presented to students, what levels of understanding are expected, what skills students will develop and when.

  • Organic expanders play an important role in the lead–acid battery. This study presents the design of an electrochemical method which evaluates the influence of some commercial expanders on the performance of the negative plate. Examination is made of different commercial expander formulations which are prepared in the laboratory under carefully controlled conditions.

  • The three restrictive-malabsorptive bypass procedures combine the elements of gastric restriction and selective malabsorption. These procedures include Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), biliopancreatic diversion (BPD), and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPDDS) (Fig. 75-2). RYGB is the most commonly performed and accepted bypass procedure. It may be performed with an open incision or laparoscopically.

  • Studies assessing rating scales are very common in psychology and related fields, but are rare in NLP. In this paper we assess discrete and continuous scales used for measuring quality assessments of computergenerated language. We conducted six separate experiments designed to investigate the validity, reliability, stability, interchangeability and sensitivity of discrete vs. continuous scales. We show that continuous scales are viable for use in language evaluation, and offer distinct advantages over discrete scales. ...

  • This paper describes a novel method by which a dialogue agent can learn to choose an optimal dialogue strategy. While it is widely agreed that dialogue strategies should be formulated in terms of communicative intentions, there has been little work on automatically optimizing an agent's choices when there are multiple ways to realize a communicative intention. Our method is based on a combination of learning algorithms and empirical evaluation techniques.

  • Some studies are content with establishing simple correlations, while others involve sophisticated econometric analysis, attempting to ascertain the existence and direction of causality. Yet other studies involve complex systems with feedback loops or large simulation models with scenario analysis. Inevitably, they reach different conclusions even when they analyze the same body of data because of differences in perspectives, levels of aggregation and methods of analysis.

  • We have developed a system that generates evaluative arguments that are tailored to the user, properly arranged and concise. We have also developed an evaluation framework in which the effectiveness of evaluative arguments can be measured with real users. This paper presents the results of a formal experiment we have performed in our framework to verify the influence of argument conciseness on argument effectiveness In the remainder of the paper, we first describe a computational framework for generating evaluative arguments at different levels of conciseness. ...

  • We present an empirical study of the applicability of Probabilistic Lexicalized Tree Insertion Grammars (PLTIG), a lexicalized counterpart to Probabilistic Context-Free Grammars (PCFG), to problems in stochastic naturallanguage processing. Comparing the performance of PLTIGs with non-hierarchical N-gram models and PCFGs, we show that PLTIG combines the best aspects of both, with language modeling capability comparable to N-grams, and improved parsing performance over its nonlexicalized counterpart. Furthermore, training of PLTIGs displays faster convergence than PCFGs. ...

  • The process of survey development forces the board to think through and specify criteria for evaluation, which the executive director can also see. Surveys can repeat certain long-term questions annually, enabling the board and executive to monitor changes over time. The survey assessment approach can also be helpful when an or- ganization has not previously conducted an assessment and the board feels it needs the perceptions of others beyond the board.
