  • Partial evaluation technology continues to grow and mature. ACM SIGPLANsponsored conferences and workshops have provided a forum for researchers to share current results and directions of work. Partial evaluation techniques are being used in commercially available compilers (for example the Chez Scheme system). They are also being used in industrial scheduling systems (see Augustsson's article in this volume), they have been incorporated into popular commercial products (see Singh's article in this volume), and they are the basis of methodologies for implementing domain-specific languages....

  • The STOP system, which generates personalised smoking-cessation letters, was evaluated by a randomised controlled clinical trial. We believe this is the largest and perhaps most rigorous task effectiveness evaluation ever performed on an NLG system. The detailed results of the clinical trial have been presented elsewhere, in the medical literature.

  • National Institute of Standards and Technology We investigate the consistency of human assessors involved in summarization evaluation to understand its effect on system ranking and automatic evaluation techniques. Using Text Analysis Conference data, we measure annotator consistency based on human scoring of summaries for Responsiveness, Readability, and Pyramid scoring.

  • In evaluating the output of language technology applications—MT, natural language generation, summarisation—automatic evaluation techniques generally conflate measurement of faithfulness to source content with fluency of the resulting text. In this paper we develop an automatic evaluation metric to estimate fluency alone, by examining the use of parser outputs as metrics, and show that they correlate with human judgements of generated text fluency.

  • As our understanding of the disease processes and the biomechanics of the hip joint and bony pelvis improves, there is a need to continuously update radiologists, orthopaedic surgeons and other professionals working in this fi eld. This book, in common with several others published in this series, takes a dual approach to the subject. The fi rst section acquaints the reader with the full range of techniques available for imaging the hip joint and musculoskeletal pelvic pathology, emphasizing the indications and contraindications....

  • To what extent is poor mental health and low educational at- tainment/ drop-out linked? Clearly the association can operate in both directions. From a policy perspective, one would like to know the causal influence of poor mental health on these outcomes. This is notoriously difficult to establish and most research addresses the association rather than the causal impact.

  • Evaluation Methods in Medical Informatics, Second Edition is a heavily updated and revised volume based on editors Friedman and Wyatt's successful first edition. This book incorporates the solid foundation of evaluation theories, methods, and techniques laid out in the first edition, and builds on it to include case studies from real world situations. Designed as a guide for both the informatics novice and the seasoned professional seeking a comprehensive resource, this book explores information systems evaluation from the ground up.

  • Paraphrase generation is an important task that has received a great deal of interest recently. Proposed data-driven solutions to the problem have ranged from simple approaches that make minimal use of NLP tools to more complex approaches that rely on numerous language-dependent resources. Despite all of the attention, there have been very few direct empirical evaluations comparing the merits of the different approaches.

  • Previous research has shown that the plausibility of an adjective-noun combination is correlated with its corpus co-occurrence frequency. In this paper, we estimate the co-occurrence frequencies of adjective-noun pairs that fail to occur in a 100 million word corpus using smoothing techniques and compare them to human plausibility ratings. Both class-based smoothing and distance-weighted averaging yield frequency estimates that are significant predictors of rated plausibility, which provides independent evidence for the validity of these smoothing techniques. ...

  • Techniques for automatically training modules of a natural language generator have recently been proposed, but a fundamental concern is whether the quality of utterances produced with trainable components can compete with hand-crafted template-based or rulebased approaches. In this paper We experimentally evaluate a trainable sentence planner for a spoken dialogue system by eliciting subjective human judgments.

  • Corrosion is expensive and can be hazardous. It is costly to replace and repair equipment, structures, and other industrial items that have been damaged as a result of corrosion. In order to understand the mechanisms of corrosion, solve the corrosion problems, and improve the corrosion resistance of materials, the use of modern evaluation and protection techniques is essential. Therefore no significant progress can be achieved in this area without the use of modern evaluation methods combined with electrochemical techniques.

  • Active Learning (AL) has been proposed as a technique to reduce the amount of annotated data needed in the context of supervised classification. While various simulation studies for a number of NLP tasks have shown that AL works well on goldstandard data, there is some doubt whether the approach can be successful when applied to noisy, real-world data sets.

  • This paper describes the work achieved in the firsthalf of a 4-year cooperative research project ( A R C A D E ) , financed by A U P E L F - U R E F . The project is devoted to the evaluation of parallel text alignment techniques. In its firstperiod ARCADE ran a competition between six systems on a sentence-to-sentence alignment task which yielded two main types of results. First, a large reference bilingual corpus comprising of texts of different genres was created, each presenting various degrees of difficultywith respect to the alignment task. ...

  • We present a stochastic parsing system consisting of a Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG), a constraint-based parser and a stochastic disambiguation model. We report on the results of applying this system to parsing the UPenn Wall Street Journal (WSJ) treebank. The model combines full and partial parsing techniques to reach full grammar coverage on unseen data. The treebank annotations are used to provide partially labeled data for discriminative statistical estimation using exponential models.
