Partial evaluation technology continues to grow and mature. ACM SIGPLANsponsored
conferences and workshops have provided a forum for researchers to
share current results and directions of work. Partial evaluation techniques are
being used in commercially available compilers (for example the Chez Scheme
system). They are also being used in industrial scheduling systems (see Augustsson's
article in this volume), they have been incorporated into popular
commercial products (see Singh's article in this volume), and they are the basis
of methodologies for implementing domain-specific languages....
The STOP system, which generates personalised smoking-cessation letters, was evaluated by a randomised controlled clinical trial. We believe this is the largest and perhaps most rigorous task effectiveness evaluation ever performed on an NLG system. The detailed results of the clinical trial have been presented elsewhere, in the medical literature.

We investigate the consistency of human assessors involved in summarization evaluation to understand its effect on system ranking and automatic evaluation techniques. Using Text Analysis Conference data, we measure annotator consistency based on human scoring of summaries for Responsiveness, Readability, and Pyramid scoring.
In evaluating the output of language technology applications—MT, natural language generation, summarisation—automatic evaluation techniques generally conﬂate measurement of faithfulness to source content with ﬂuency of the resulting text. In this paper we develop an automatic evaluation metric to estimate ﬂuency alone, by examining the use of parser outputs as metrics, and show that they correlate with human judgements of generated text ﬂuency.

Paraphrase generation is an important task that has received a great deal of interest recently. Proposed data-driven solutions to the problem have ranged from simple approaches that make minimal use of NLP tools to more complex approaches that rely on numerous language-dependent resources. Despite all of the attention, there have been very few direct empirical evaluations comparing the merits of the different approaches.
Previous research has shown that the plausibility of an adjective-noun combination is correlated with its corpus co-occurrence frequency. In this paper, we estimate the co-occurrence frequencies of adjective-noun pairs that fail to occur in a 100 million word corpus using smoothing techniques and compare them to human plausibility ratings. Both class-based smoothing and distance-weighted averaging yield frequency estimates that are signiﬁcant predictors of rated plausibility, which provides independent evidence for the validity of these smoothing techniques. ...
Techniques for automatically training modules of a natural language generator have recently been proposed, but a fundamental concern is whether the quality of utterances produced with trainable components can compete with hand-crafted template-based or rulebased approaches. We present a stochastic parsing system consisting of a Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG), a constraint-based parser and a stochastic disambiguation model. We report on the results of applying this system to parsing the UPenn Wall Street Journal (WSJ) treebank. The model combines full and partial parsing techniques to reach full grammar coverage on unseen data. The treebank annotations are used to provide partially labeled data for discriminative statistical estimation using exponential models.
