An important part of text understanding arises from
understanding the semantics of events described in
the narrative, such as identifying the events that are
mentioned and how they are related semantically.
For instance, when given a sentence “The police
arrested him because he killed someone.”, humans
understand that there are two events, triggered by
the words “arrested” and “killed”, and that there is
a causality relationship between these two events.
Human activities are affecting the global environment in myriad
ways, with numerous direct and indirect effects on ecosystems.
The climate and atmospheric composition of Earth are changing
rapidly. Humans have directly modified half of the ice-free terrestrial
surface and use 40% of terrestrial production. Our actions are
causing the sixth major extinction event in the history of life on
Earth and are radically modifying the interactions among forests,
fields, streams, and oceans.
Orbis Scientiae 1999 constitutes the 28th conference on High Energy Physics
and Cosmology that were begun in 1964. It has now become an institution by itself
under the aegis of which the physicists convene annually in South Florida. It created a
Belle Époque in Coral Gables. The series of Orbis Scientiae started with the participants
of highest distinction in physics of the 20th Century. After its first two decades the
conferences have been placed in the hands of younger and promising physicists....
This paper examines the informational efficiency of loans relative to bonds using a
unique dataset of daily secondary market prices of loans. We find that the loan market
is informationally more efficient than the bond market prior to and surrounding infor-
mation intensive events, such as corporate (loan and bond) defaults, and bankruptcies.
Specifically, we find that loan prices fall more than bond prices prior to an event, and
less than bond prices of the same borrower during a short time period surrounding an
If there have been events of human exposure to the mixture, such as a prior oil spill, worker health
studies can provide the greatest amount of insight regarding future spills. These studies, such as the one
conducted after the Prestige oil spill off the coast of Spain1
, comprehensively examine adverse health
effects of oil rather than a single constituent chemical.
Fragility in the Fourth Quadrant can be re-expressed as “concavity
to errors,” where losses from uncertain events vastly exceed possible
profits from it over short horizons. One class of investment strate-
gies that typically have this property are so-called “short volatility”
trading strategies or positions (e.g. such as naked put-writing), which
are often manifest in “carry trades.
The perfect calm of an early spring dawn lies over headland and sea--hardly a ripple stirs the blue cheek of the
bay. The softness of departing night lies upon the bosom of the Mediterranean like the dew upon the heart of a
A silent dawn.
Veils of transparent greys and purples and mauves still conceal the distant horizon. Breathless calm rests upon
the water and that awed hush which at times descends upon Nature herself when the finger of Destiny marks
an eventful hour.
Nigerian Boat Regatta Sets Sail toward Healthier Horizons
In Nigeria, small grant awardee So-Healthi hosted a boat regatta to raise awareness about pneumonia
and the fact that it kills nearly 180,000 Nigerian children each year. The event focused on educating
families about prevention and treatment of the illness and drew more than 300 participants.
During the event, a medical team examined babies and children for pneumonia, and local government
officials announced that pneumococcal vaccine doses donated by Pfizer were being administered
in their state that day.
