The initial reason for writing Complementary and Alternative Medicine: An Evidence-
Based Approach was the need to examine research evidence and claims purported by
advocates, clinicians, and researchers of complementary and alternative medicine
(CAM) regarding its effectiveness. Both of us had previous experience with certain of
these therapies since we had worked with American Indians who used alternative spiritual-
indigenous medical approaches to health-related problems. Joseph Jacobs, a
Mohawk, grew up using many of these healing practices.

This book is the first to look at NLP coaching as an evidence-based discipline. Susie Linder-Pelz describes how NLP coaching works, using examples and case studies to highlight what distinguishes it from other coaching approaches. She briefs readers on the theoretical underpinnings of NLP, and she explains which aspects of NLP can be backed with evidence and which aspects are not yet substantiated. A set of research questions helps coaches understand when and how to use NLP.
Why do thoracic surgeons need training in decision making? Many of us who have
weathered harrowing residencies in surgery feel that, after such experiences, decision
making is a natural extension of our selves. While this is no doubt true, correct decision
making is something that many of us have yet to master. The impetus to develop
a text on evidence-based decision making in thoracic surgery was stimulated by a
conference for cardiothoracic surgical trainees developed in 2004 and sponsored by
the American College of Chest Physicians....
Evidence-based practice has become a common expression in the helping
professions over the last decade. Beginning with medicine and moving to
fi elds such as psychology and social work, the number of books on evidencebased

social workers. It is not a research book. It is a book about research-infused
Evidence-based medicine (EBM) has been famously characterized by
David Sackett as the “conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current
best evidence in making decisions about individual care.” The central
in EBM of the importance of integrating individual clinical expertise
with the best available external evidence provides a helpful framework for
providers navigating the uncertainty inherent in patient care.

As the global epidemic of diabetes continues to expand, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is predicted to double in
the next 20 years. Continued population growth, increasing age, and worldwide globalization leading to changes in
diet and patterns of physical inactivity have resulted in staggering numbers of individuals affected by the disease.
A haphazard approach to treatment for a problem of this magnitude could easily overburden the healthcare system,
particularly in areas of the world with limited resources.

The central idea of evidence-based education—that education policy
and practice ought to be fashioned based on what is known from
rigorous research—offers a compelling way to approach reform
efforts. Recent federal trends reflect a growing enthusiasm for such change.
Most visibly, the No Child Left Behind Act requires that “scientifically
based [education] research” drive the use of federal education funds at the
state and local levels. This emphasis is also reflected in a number of government
and nongovernment initiatives across the country.
We acknowledge that there are serious gaps in the current evidence base, and we recognise
too, that those in the UK who call for the introduction of financial incentives do so out of a
genuine concern for the welfare of those waiting for an organ transplant.

Contrary to the belief of many people, the health, safety and socioeconomic problems
attributable to alcohol can be effectively reduced. Many evidence-based alcohol policies
and prevention programmes are shown to work. One of the most effective is raising
alcohol prices by raising taxes. This has the added benefi t of generating increased
revenues. A recent analysis of 112 studies on the effects of alcohol tax increases affi rmed
that when taxes go up, drinking goes down, including among problem drinkers and youth.
