The empirical relationship between capital controls and the financial development of credit and equity markets is examined. We extend the literature on this subject along a number of dimensions.Specifically, we
(1) investigate a substantially broader set of proxy measures of financial development;
(2) create and utilize a new index based on the IMF measures of exchange restrictions that incorporates a measure of the intensity of capital controls; and (3) extend the previous literature by systematically examining the implications of institutional (legal) factors.
The suggested guidelines in this manual have been developed from a number of sources,
and most are applicable to a wide range of mass public gatherings. These sources focused
on youth audiences attending large rock concerts and competitive sporting events because
of the difficulties and major incidents historically associated with such events. Many of the
guidelines derived from such experiences are applicable to a broad range of other events
that present their own challenges.
Certain types of events have an inherent capacity for special management problems.
The available data does, however, suggest that present PM10 values exceed the recommended limit values
in the majority of Member States. In future projections, planned actions should be taken into
consideration. These include the SOx and NOx Protocols within UNECE and the Auto-Oil programme.
Abatement policies for other pollutants will also have an impact.
Another way to look at cross-country evidence is to look at
the association between tax ratios and, not the level of prosper-
ity, but the growth rate of prosperity. There have been a large
number of studies about this concept in the last twenty years.
Robert Barro of Harvard had an influential study several years
back claiming to find that, while holding other determinants of
growth constant, low tax rates and low government spending
were associated with higher growth.
The aim of this paper is to develop animated agents that can control multimodal instruction dialogues by monitoring user’s behaviors. First, this paper reports on our Wizard-of-Oz experiments, and then, using the collected corpus, proposes a probabilistic model of fine-grained timing dependencies among multimodal communication behaviors: speech, gestures, and mouse manipulations.
This document contains practical suggestions for teaching strategies that will assist the University’s
international students. Some of the suggestions may seem self-evident as they represent widely
accepted principles of effective teaching in higher education. Nonetheless they are worth reiterating.
The University of Melbourne endeavours to create environments which foster academic excellence
and which encourage all students to engage with their learning communities.
Learning mathematics in the middle
grades is a critical component in the
education of our nation’s youth. The
mathematics foundation laid during
these years provides students with the
skills and knowledge to study higher
level mathematics during high school,
provides the necessary mathematical
base for success in other disciplines such
as science, and lays the groundwork for
mathematically literate citizens. A
variety of evidence suggests that the
mathematics education landscape is
shifting and evolving rapidly....
The author discusses Packer’s thesis and its flaws in order to (A) contrast the sensuality of Rossetti’s poetry with the relative starkness of her devotional commentary. (B) reveal the secret to which Rossetti alludes in “Winter: My Secret.” (C) call into question the authenticity of recently discovered letters written by Rossetti. (D) compare Woolf’s understanding of Rossetti with a recent, more enlightened view. (E) provide a foundation for the author’s own theory about Rossetti’s life and work. 39.
Stressful life events such as trauma, loss of a loved one,
a diicult relationship or any stressful situation—whether
welcome or unwelcome—oten occur before a depressive
episode. Additional work and home responsibilities, caring
for children and aging parents, abuse, and poverty also may
trigger a depressive episode. Evidence suggests that women
respond diferently than men to these events, making them
more prone to depression.
As with other age groups, more older women than older
men experience depression, but rates decrease among
women after menopause.
Evidence suggests that
depression in post-menopausal women generally occurs
in women with prior histories of depression. In any case,
depression is NOT a normal part of aging.
The death of a spouse or loved one, moving from work
into retirement, or dealing with a chronic illness can leave
women and men alike feeling sad or distressed.
The authors study the effect of financial crises on trade credit in a sample of 890 firms in six emerging economies. They find that although provision of trade credit increases right after the crisis, it consequently collapses in the following months and years. The authors observe that firms with weaker financial position (for example, high pre-crisis level of short-term debt and low cash stocks and cash flows) are more likely to reduce trade credit provided to their customers.
Agriculture is also a significant source of economic growth. In developing countries,
agriculture generates on average 29 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) and
employs 65 percent of the labour force. About two thirds of the world’s agricultural value
added is produced in developing countries. At the same time, agriculture also plays an
important role in transforming and urbanized economies, where industries and services
linked to agriculture account for more than 30 percent of GDP (ibid.).
Currently, one of the most established and widely accepted stem cell bank systems is
umbilical cord blood banking. However, the establishement of somatic stem cell bank
other than cord blood (non-hematopoietic stem cells) is still underway. The nature of
somatic stem/progenitor cells is much different from that of embryonic stem (ES) cells
and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Somatic stem/progenitor cells possess limited
ability to differentiate compared with ES cells and iPS cells.
Cigarette smokers were 2.7 times more likely to have
respiratory diseases than those of non-smokers. Similarly
consumption of alcohol and use of non-smoked tobacco
were found to be risk factors of hypertension.
BMI more than 25 was risk factor for hypertension
and diabetes. On the other hand risk of respiratory
diseases and cataract increased below a BMI of 18.5.
Risk for musculoskeletal problems was found to be
higher in both extremes of physical status. The higher
risk of diseases to the both extremes of BMI suggests a U-
shaped relationship of diseases with BMI. BMI less 18.
On many levels, YouthAIDS revealed the power of celebrity advocates in promoting
awareness and raising funds for a cause. Celebrity advocates were able to raise funds
through conventional and unconventional means for the organization. For example,
actress Debra Messing’s field visit to Zimbabwe raised awareness for PSI’s work in that
country and provided the additional advocacy needed to raise millions of dollars of
additional funding from USAID so many more kids could be saved.
The discussion of the properties of relative international prices has been closely tied with
a discussion on the nature of the pricing decisions by ¯rms.
The observed slow pass-through
of exchange rate changes to consumer prices and deviations from the law of one price for
traded goods are consistent with prices of imported goods that are sticky in the currency
of the consumer (local currency pricing). This pricing mechanism, however, dampens the
expenditure-switching e®ect of nominal exchange rate movements.
Developing Asia achieved impressive economic growth in
the last decade and had remarkable success in lifting large
numbers of people in the region out of poverty. At the
same time, recent evidence suggests that in many growing
economies of developing Asia, rising income disparities
are widening the gap between the rich and the poor.
The relational database uses the concept of linked two-dimensional tables consisting
of rows and columns, as shown in Figure 1-2. Unlike the hierarchical approach, no
predetermined relationship exists between distinct tables. This means that the data
needed to link together the different areas of the network or hierarchical model need
not be defined. Because relational users don’t need to understand the representation
of data in storage to retrieve it (many such users created ad hoc queries against the
data), ease of use helped popularize the relational model....
Despite our best intentions, most of what constitutes modern medical
imaging practice is based on habit, anecdotes, and scientific writings that
are too often fraught with biases. Best estimates suggest that only around
30% of what constitutes “imaging knowledge” is substantiated by reliable
scientific inquiry. This poses problems for clinicians and radiologists,
because inevitably, much of what we do for patients ends up being inefficient,
inefficacious, or occasionally even harmful.
