had great diffi culty fi nding a title for this book. For long, the working title was
Genetic Variation and Extinction. However, this title implies a causal and simple
relationship between genetic variation and extinction. I do think that the study
of genetic variation is extremely important for conservation biology but, as will
become apparent while reading the text, I am not as sure that this relationship is
as simple and straightforward as I thought when I began this voyage.

Island biogeography is an important subject for
several reasons. First, it has been and remains a
field which feeds ideas, theories, models, and tests

Based on logistic regression, we developed habitat models for the burnet moth Zygaena carniolica and the nymphalid butterfly Coenonympha arcania in Northern Bavaria, Germany. The relation between adult occurrence and habitat parameters - including the influence of the landscape context - was analyzed on 118 sites.

The structure of the thyroid hormone distributor protein, transthyretin, has
been highly conserved during the evolution of vertebrates. Over the last
decade, studies into the evolution of transthyretin have revealed the exis-tence of a transthyretin homolog, transthyretin-like protein, in all king-doms. Phylogenetic studies have suggested that the transthyretin gene in
fact arose as a result of a duplication of the transthyretin-like protein gene
in early protochordate evolution.
Recently, the conserved human LINC⁄DREAM complex has been
described as an important regulator of cell cycle genes. LINC consists of a
core module that dynamically associates with E2F transcription factors,
p130 and the B-MYB transcription factor in a cell cycle-dependent manner.
In this study, we analyzed the evolutionary conserved LIN54 subunit of
PARP-like zinc fingers (zf-PARPs) are protein domains apt to the recogni-tion of multiple DNA secondary structures. They were initially described
as the DNA-binding, nick-sensor domains of poly(ADP-ribose)polymerases
(PARPs). It now appears that zf-PARPs are evolutionary conserved in the
eukaryotic lineage and associated with various enzymes implicated in
nucleic acid transactions.
