YOU’RE holding one part of a truly stellar phenomenon in the computing industry:
the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition. This book is a key piece of a visionary
effort that began more than two years ago with the introduction of the J2EE platform.
In that time, the J2EE engineering team has defined a new ecosystem for networked
computing and taught the world a new way to develop distributed
Promoting equity and active citizenship: IPTS research results indicate that social media
approaches to learning can mitigate existing inequalities and can be employed to successfully
re-engage individuals who are at risk of exclusion from the knowledge society. Learning 2.0
strategies can effectively increase the accessibility and availability of learning opportunities
for the hard to reach, and can significantly improve motivation and engagement in learning.
There is no denying that such feelings of aesthetic pleasure may exist, indeed that they do exist.
The problem is to see where they come from. Matters are, at least from the philosophical point of
view, still relatively simple where we have to deal with feelings of aesthetic pleasure directed
towards aesthetic objects in the first two categories of simple sensations and purely formal
Most interviewees agree concerning the basic characteristics and traits for a project
leader. These characteristics include: forward-looking; competent; inspiring; intelligent;
enterprising spirit; loyalty; leadership motivation; integrity; self-confidence; and
knowledgeable of the business. As identified by this group of experts, one of the
important traits is the ability to communicate effectively.
Psychologist H.J. Eysenck’s studies support the existence of an objective factor of aesthetic
appreciation independent of individual tastes. Eysenck described a “general factor” underlying
aesthetic discrimination [Eys40][Eys72]. Eysenck asked observers to rank over 300 pictures
of portraits, vases, clocks, ships, and so forth, in the order of liking. The subjects and pictures
were chosen to eliminate irrelevant associations due to the cultural background of the sub-
jects, the technical execution of the images, and subjects’ familiarity with the images.
Mechanical impedance is experienced to varying degrees by virtually all roots growing through
soil. If continuous pores of sufficiently large diameter do not already exist, a root tip must exert a
force to deform the soil. This process may considerably decrease root elongation rates, increase the
root diameter and change the pattern of lateral root initiation (Russell, 1977).
In this paper, the effects of mechanical impedance on root morphology are reviewed and some
direct comparisons between soil resistance to root growth and resistance to a penetrometer are
Many systems administrators on the Mac need a way to manage machine configuration after initial setup and deployment. Apple’s Managed Preferences system (also known as MCX) is under-documented, often misunderstood, and sometimes outright unknown by systems administrators. MCX is usually deployed in conjunction with an OS X server, but it can also be used in Windows environments or where no dedicated server exists at all.
As a consultant, the process of designing and developing technology-based solutions
is one that you get to know intimately, thanks to iteration. Having been
involved in a dozen or more projects in the past few years, I came to realize that a
common component exists at the center of every one of those solutions. That component
is the data storage system.
Since the eighth edition was published, this book has strengthened its position as a
market leader in the Strategic Management market. This tells us that we continue
to meet the expectations of existing users and attract many new users to our book.
It is clear that most strategy instructors share with us a concern for our currency in
the text and its examples to ensure that cutting-edge issues and new developments in
strategic management are continually addressed.
You can enhance Oracle performance by adjusting database applications, the database
itself, and the operating system. Making such adjustments is known as tuning.
Proper tuning of Oracle provides the best possible database performance for your
specific application and hardware configuration.
Note: Oracle8 Tuning contains information that describes the features and functionality
of the Oracle8 and the Oracle8 Enterprise Edition products. Oracle8 and
Oracle8 Enterprise Edition have the same basic features.
On the global stage small businesses are represented in many different communities. At a UK and EU level small businesses are defined as having 10-50 employees and offer considerable scope for innovation and productivity. Additionally, the European Union Research and Advisory Board (EURAB, 2004) has provided a helpful typology in terms of the amount of R&D that is undertaken. Four basic categories provide insight into the level of use and the extent of R&D that is conducted.
To better understand the sources of outperformance, we undertake an attribution analysis
that decomposes investor returns into that from (1) the selection of Pan-European funds, (2) the
selection of country funds, (3) the selection of sector funds, and (4) the timing of country weights
implied by the selection of country funds. This analysis shows that the superior returns associated
with the macroeconomic-driven strategies arise from the last three sources of performance, and
not from choosing Pan-European funds.
The growth of investments in mutual funds around the world has widely increased during the
past few decades, leading to fierce competition in the industry. Investors now have a wide
range of products to choose from, which makes their investment decision more complicated
than before. Although there are many factors in their decisions, performance still seems to be
a determining factor (see Ippolito, 1992; Capon et al., 1996; Sirri and Tufano, 1998).
This is called a work breakdown structure. LBMS provides a series of standard
work breakdown structures for strategic planning and applications development.
However, it is important to look for opportunities to customize this for the particular
circumstances of the project and its objectives. The work breakdown structure will
provide a benchmark by which the quality of the project process can be assessed.
The Project Initiation Stage must also define what resources and associated time
commitment are required to carry out the project.
Given the diversity of the adult ESOL population, these learners clearly
have varying needs for English language use (Weddel & Van Duzer,
1997), specifi cally in terms of their oral communication. The Equipped
for the Future (EFF) initiative asked adult learners across the United States
to respond to Goal 6 of the National Education Goals: “By the year 2000,
every adult American will be literate and will possess the knowledge and
skills necessary to compete in a global economy and exercise the rights
and responsibilities of citizenship” (Merrifi eld, 2000, p. 4).
Writing is the most dreaded activity for my fourth grade students. Not only do
they strongly oppose writing in all forms, they struggle to use the proper mechanics to
communicate effectively with a targeted audience. My frustration with my students’
abilities to be effective writers led me to investigate the following question: “Will the
implementation of selected lessons and activities taken from 6+1 Traits of Writing and
Writer’s Workshop equip my students with the descriptive and mechanical writing skills
they need to become proficient writers?” ...
There are no steadfast rules or Department of State regulations that state that an EFM of a
diplomat operating a business for the exclusive use of other diplomats is exempt from local
business start-up policies, including registration and paying local taxes. However, since both the
owner/operator of the business and all clients or customers have diplomatic status, the logical
extension would be that this exemption does exist. Still, be careful in making such an
The impact assessment concludes that a 'strict liability' standard obliging depositaries to return
instruments lost in custody irrespective of fault or negligence is both conducive to ensuring a
high level of investor protection and to achieving a uniform standard across the EU.
What our initial study did contemplate, however, was that
support measures need to be flexible to fulfill the markets’
needs. A wide spectrum of financial intermediaries, active in
microfinance in the EU (microfinance institutions, “MFIs”), has
been developing, and the product range offered to them has
to be sufficiently wide in order to meet their diverse needs and
to enable them to provide efficient support to the final

The ideal experiment to evaluate the impact of socially responsible investing on performance
and fees would be to observe the same funds both with and without the SRI constraint. Most
previous studies (Gregory et al., 1997; Statman, 2000; Kreander et al., 2005; Bauer et al., 2005)
approximate the ideal experiment by comparing the performance of SRI funds to that of a
control group of comparable conventional funds, a methodology that is known as matched-pair
