  • Smear microscopy and culture forms the backbone of tuberculosis (TB) laboratory investigations in tertiary healthcare facilities which have a large number of cases and financial constraints. The present study aimed to re-evaluate the efficiency of smear microscopy and culture on Lowenstein Jensen (LJ) medium for acid fast bacilli (AFB) isolated from patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. 210 samples were processed for detection of AFB by Ziehl Neelsen (ZN) staining. Concentration method of N-acetly-L-cystein-NaOH was used and the samples were isolated on LJ medium. AFB was seen in 168 (80.

  • The book "Wind Tunnels and Experimental Fluid Dynamics Research" is comprised of 33 chapters divided in five sections. The first 12 chapters discuss wind tunnel facilities and experiments in incompressible flow, while the next seven chapters deal with building dynamics, flow control and fluid mechanics. Third section of the book is dedicated to chapters discussing aerodynamic field measurements and real full scale analysis (chapters 20-22).

  • The fields of cosmology and particle astrophysics (sometimes collectively named astroparticle physics) are currently experiencing an era which will most probably be remembered as ‘the golden age’. The developments during the last few years have been truly astonishing, and the planning and building of new detectors, telescopes and other experimental facilities will guarantee an interesting decade to follow.

  • Design guidelines for predicting the axial capacity of piles in sand have long been the source of considerable debate due to the geotechnical profession’s inadequate understanding of pile behavior. Analytical studies, alone, cannot resolve the uncertainties in axial capacity predictions due to the complex nature of pile behavior in sand. This chapter presents some of the factors which occur during installation and loading of pipe piles in sand, along with their potential impact on axial capacity....

  • Perceived quality of care is an important factor that determines whether people choose to utilise SRH services. Evidence from Bangladesh, Senegal and Tanzania suggests that in areas where women felt that they were receiving a high standard of care, they were more likely to use contraceptives than in areas with lower quality health facilities. Improving quality of care requires that patients’ perspectives and levels of satisfaction are taken into account when evaluating services, and are incorporated into policy decisions.

  • As we said at the beginning, the aim of projects is to initiate change, to promote innovation. One of the most difficult parts of project management is the process of implementation, of taking the outcomes of projects and integrating them into the everyday work of the institution. One of the reasons for this is the special status of projects – they have special time and resources allocated to them and those who are involved, both the project team and any students who take part, are motivated by the experimental nature of the work....

  • In recognition of the fact that the potential for release of particulate plutonium and transplutonium alpha-emitting elements from nuclear power generation facilities poses questions concerning spatial distribution of dose and the resultant biological effects, the NCRP initiated a new NCRP activity concerned with alpha-emitting particles in lungs. It was not intended that a complete review of the subject would be prepared.

  • Defining Critical Infrastructure: Nearly every organization is susceptible to a cyber attack. However, it is cost prohibitive to protect everything, and not every asset, even those within critical infrastructures, will have an impact on national security or critical functions. The government should work closely with each sector to identify elements of critical infrastructure that, if damaged or destroyed, could cause great loss of life or significant economic damage impacting our national security.

  • In those situations where an individual will have visitors in the home, refuses to wear a mask or cover his/her mouth when coughing, and/or is less likely to adhere to an anti-TB treatment regimen because of drug or alcohol addiction, it may be prudent to be more conservative and keep the patient in the hospital until sputum is AFB smear-negative. The individual may be transferred to another facility while still AFB smear positive, as long as it is to an AII room. The individual should be transported with appropriate respiratory precautions....

  • By the close of official activities, the project had already contributed notably towards increasing the productivity of livestock in the RCA countries, largely by increasing the production of milk and meat. This, in turn, enhanced the incomes of the participating farmers. In addition, due to the establishment of close coordination between this project, national projects and coordinated research programmes, several laboratories have received complementary assistance for upgrading their facilities and for consolidating their experimentation capabilities in the field.
