This strategic lab guide explores the current methodological variety of molecular biology and genomics in a simple manner, addressing the assets and drawbacks as well as critical points. It also provides short and precise summaries of routine procedures as well as listings of the advantages and disadvantages of alternative methods. This lab book illustrates ways out of experimental dead ends and teaches a feeling for doing the right experiment at the right time.
Pyrolysis of activated sewage sludge was investigated under inert conditions in a fluidised-bed to study the effects of temperature and gas residence time on the product distribution and composition with an aim to maximise the oil yield.
The present work describes an experimental study on sewage sludge pyrolysis in a Fluidised Bed Reactor(FluBR) and the effect on the pyrolysis liquid product of passing the hot exhaust (pyrolysis) vapours through a Fixed Bed Reactor (FixBR) filled with gamma-alumina (c-Al2O3).
Clarissa, an experimental voice enabled procedure browser that has recently been deployed on the International Space Station (ISS), is to the best of our knowledge the first spoken dialog system in space. This paper gives background on the system and the ISS procedures, then discusses the research developed to address three key problems: grammarbased speech recognition using the Regulus toolkit; SVM based methods for open microphone speech recognition; and robust side-effect free dialogue management for handling undos, corrections and confirmations. ...
The purpose of this handbook is to provide in one location detailed, up-to-date information on various
facets of mass measurement that will be useful to those involved in mass metrology at the highest level
(at national standards laboratories, for example), in science and engineering, in industry and commerce,
in legal metrology, and in more routine mass measurements or weighings. We have pursued clarity and
hope that we have in some measure succeeded.
The aim of the study was to investigate the crystallization kinetics and solidification
behaviour of Fe60Co8Mo5Zr10W2B15 bulk glass forming alloy. The solidification
behaviour in near-equilibrium and non-equilibrium cooling conditions was studied.
The eutectic and peritectic reactions were found to exist in the solidification
sequence of the alloy. The bulk metallic glass formation was achieved by using two
methods: quenching from the liquid state and quenching from the semi-state.
I hope that the reader will find these chapters useful to get new perspectives on some
of the current topics and issues in membrane trafficking, and to get a sense on the
diversity of approaches and experimental systems that are used in this field.
Finally, I would like to thank all the people associated with the production of this
book. First, the authors themselves for taking the time to prepare their chapters in a
timely manner and in a format filled with technical details and novel and exciting
concepts. It is not an easy task, and I sincerely thank them for their efforts.
In 1990, preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) was introduced as an experimental procedure to genetically screen human embryos during an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle (1,2). More than a decade later, PGD has become an established clinical procedure in assisted reproductive technologies with over 6500 PGD cycles performed worldwide, resulting in the birth of well over 1000 healthy babies and a pregnancy rate per transfer of approximately 24% (3).

The majority of studies addressed in this chapter reflect research findings that provide "best bets"
for preventing sexual risk-taking behaviors. These derive from longitudinal, multivariate
analyses of reproductive health topics. In addition, a synthesis of programs that have had
rigorous experimental designs help provide information on "what works" and what doesn't work
within the program field.
Some recent experiments support a claim that the observed differences between
willingness to pay and willingness to accept are related to experimental procedures and
have nothing to do with preference asymmetries (Plott and Zeiler (2003)) or are
eliminated by trading experience (List, 2003). Older people are often presumed to be
more conservative and more likely to avoid risk. If this is true, then it would seem
natural to expect loss avoidance to be stronger in the older populations.
The reactions of the flavin semiquinone generated by laser-induced stepwise
two-photon excitation of reduced flavin have been studied previously
(El Hanine-Lmoumene C & Lindqvist L. (1997) Photochem Photobiol66,
591–595) using time-resolved spectroscopy. In the present work, we have
used the same experimental procedure to study the flavin semiquinone in
rat kidney long-chain hydroxy acid oxidase and in the flavodehydrogenase
domain of flavocytochrome b2 FDH
Modification of Soy proteins and Their Adhesive Properties on Woods demand for adhesives, the uncer tainty of continuing availability of petrochemical products, and demand for environmentally safe products promoted the development of adhesives from renewable, inexpensive sources.
Tumor suppressor protein p53 plays a central role in maintaining genomic integrity
[1–3]. In unstimulated cells p53 is maintained at very low levels but in response to
DNA damage or other stress stimuli, such as hypoxia or activation of oncogenes,
p53 becomes stabilized and accumulates in the cell [4, 5]. p53 can exert its tumor
suppressor function in different ways (Fig. 1.1).
Chapter 8 - Experimental research. This chapter includes contents: Overview of experimental research, systematic procedures, steps in experimental research, research validity, internal validity, threats to internal validity, threats continued,...

Part I starts this book off with a collection of basic overviews, spanning Chapters 1 and 2.
From the early 1970s to mid-1990s, positron emission tomography (PET)
as a diagnostic imaging modality had been for the most part used in experimental
research. Clinical PET started only a decade ago. 82Rb-RbCl and
18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug administration
in 1989 and 1994, respectively, for clinical PET imaging. Reimbursement
by Medicare was approved in 1995 for 82Rb-PET myocardial
perfusion imaging and for 18F-FDG PET for various oncologic indications
in 1999. Currently several more PET procedures are covered for
Fuel Injection is a key process characterising the combustion development within Spark-
Ignition (SI) and Compression Ignition (CI) Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs). Fuel Injection
and Spray Behaviour in fact largely control the fuel-air mixing, combustion process efficiency,
stability, the production of noxious species, the radiated noise, etc.The proper design of the
fuel injection system requires the employment of both experimental and numerical techniques,
sometimes coupled for optimisation procedures....

Endovascular procedures have a tremendous impact upon modern patient care. This book summarizes covered stent-graft applications in the experimental and clinical settings. Excellent illustrations document the acute and chronic behavior of stent-grafts within the vascular system including diagnostic imaging, histologic work-up and schematic drawings. A large amount of experience on intravascular ultrasound-based repair of aortic pathologies is presented. Physicians interested in the endovascular field will find this book a very stimulating resource.
