  • We present evidence that head-driven parsing strategies lead to efficiency gains over standard parsing strategies, for lexicalist, concatenative and unification-based grammars. A head-driven parser applies a rule only after a phrase matching the head has been derived. By instantiating the head of the rule important information is obtained about the left-hand-side and the other elements of the right-hand-side. We have used two different head-driven parsers and a number of standard parsers to parse with lexicalist grammars for English and for Dutch. ...

  • This paper raises concerns that natural language front ends for computer systems can limit a researcher's scope of thinking, yield inappropriately complex systems, and exaggerate public fear of computers. Alternative modes of computer use are suggested and the role of psychologically oriented controlled experimentation is emphasized. Research methods and recent experimental results are briefly reviewed.

  • THE USE OF INTENAL AUDIT FINDINGS IN GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION : AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY In modeling the effects of parental preferences on equilibrium outcomes under Tiebout choice, it is important to account for two key issues that do not arise under choice programs like vouchers. The first is that residential choice rations access to highlydemanded schools by willingness-to-pay for local housing.4 As a result, both schools and districts in high-choice markets (those with many competing school districts) are more stratified than in low-choice markets....

  • Data of unknown quality are useless! All laboratory measurements contain experimental error. It is necessary to determine the magnitude of the accuracy and reliability in your measurements. Then you can make a judgment about their usefulness. Replicates - two or more determinations on the same sample Example 3-1: One student measures Fe (III) concentrations six times. The results are listed below: 19.4, 19.5, 19. 6, 19.8, 20.1, 20.3 ppm (parts per million) 6 replicates = 6 measurements The "middle" or "central" value for a group of results: Mean: average or arithmetic mean ...

  • This paper specifies that research, analysis and estimate on marine environmental and biological conditions are very important for fishing ground forecast in offshore waters. The multi-variate regression equations among Catch Per Unit Efforts (CPUE), temperature structures and primary production have been established and used for monthly fishing ground forecast for purse-seine and drift-gillnet fisheries in the offshore waters of central Vietnam. The experiment forecast result in May, June and

  • This study uses what Cresswell (2003) refers to as a ‘mixed methods approach’, one that combines quantitative and qualitative data collection and a ‘sequential explanatory strategy’ in which the collection and analysis of the quantitative data is followed by the collection and analysis of the qualitative data (p 215).

  • Abstract: Industry standard for the control of switch mode power supply (SMPS) systems has been analog control. Now with the advent of high speed, lower cost digital signal processing (DSP) ICs, digital control there has been an increased interest in digital control of SMPS. The Power Electronics & Power Quality Laboratory of Texas A&M University is currently exploring several implementation aspects of digital control of power factor correction (PFC) stage of SMPS. Two low cost digital controllers: TMS320LF2407 and ST52x420 are evaluated for implementing PFC function.

  • As currently taught, the introductory course in analytical chemistry emphasizes quantitative (and sometimes qualitative) methods of analysis coupled with a heavy dose of equilibrium chemistry. Analytical chemistry, however, is more than equilib- rium chemistry and a collection of analytical methods; it is an approach to solving chemical problems. Although discussing different methods is important, that dis- cussion should not come at the expense of other equally important topics.

  • Whereas the mechanical performance of plant organs has often been discussed in evolutionary biology [1,2], tree biomechanics has rarely been considered in the context of functional ecology. Functional ecology aims at understanding the functions of organisms that result in fluxes of biomass or energy within an ecosystem, e.g., a forest. This discipline studies the processes controlling these fluxes, at either the scale of an individual, community, or ecosystem, with their response to natural or anthropic environmental variations....

  • Our results generally showed that in the investigated microbial community autotrophic component was dominant over the heterotrophic component during the winter season, while dominance of heterotrophic component in the microbial community was observed during the warmer seasons. Further, within the prokaryotic community heterotrophic prokaryotes were mostly dominant throughout the studied area.

  • A wide range of issues related to analysis of gas turbines and their engineering applications are considered in the book. Analytical and experimental methods are employed to identify failures and quantify operating conditions and efficiency of gas turbines. Gas turbine engine defect diagnostic and condition monitoring systems, operating conditions of open gas turbines, reduction of jet mixing noise, recovery of exhaust heat from gas turbines, appropriate materials and coatings, ultra micro gas turbines and applications of gas turbines are discussed.

  • Science progresses by a symbiotic interaction between theory and experiment: theory is used to interpret experimental results and may suggest new experiments; experiment helps to test theoretical predictions and may lead to improved theories. Theoretical Chemistry (including Physical Chemistry and Chemical Physics) provides the concep- tual and technical background and apparatus for the rationalisation of phenomena in the chemical sciences. It is, therefore, a wide ranging subject, reflecting the diversity of molecular and related species and processes arising in chemical systems.

  • Thanks to a long, successful marketing campaign by De Beers, diamonds became strongly associated with romantic love, first in the United States and then globally (see.Figure.5). In the 1940s the company launched a long-running and renowned campaign around the theme “A diamond is forever.” Over many decades, hundreds of millions of dollars were spent to market the notion that diamonds signify romance and love. That campaign benefited the entire diamond industry.

  • Introduction: On 23 March 1989, electrochemists M. Fleischmann and S. Pons claimed in a press conference at the University of Utah that they had achieved nuclear fusion in a tabletop chemistry experiment. Since then, evidence of fusion in what is now called low-energy nuclear reaction (LENR) research has grown only slightly stronger. Their hypothesis that a novel form of thermonuclear fusion was responsible for their experimental results is still unproved.

  • Tabulated results, as shown in Table 2,look like a sea of numbers. There is a way to bring out the essential characteristics of such collections of many measurements on the same thing. Paradoxically we may condense the data into more compact form and at the same time get a better picture of the collection. The smallest of the 95 results is 0.0655 mm. and the largest is 0.0864 mm. The range for these 95 results is therefore 0.0209. Suppose we form a series of intervals to cover this range. We may start out at 0.0650 mm. and make each interval...

  • 7 Biological Effects of Synthetic Surfactants and Participation of Hydrobionts in Water Purification Experience indicates the negative impacts of surfactants and surfactant-containing preparations on representatives of the major functional ecosystemic blocks, including both autotrophic and heterotrophic organisms (see above). The author realizes that interpretation of the results obtained requires great caution and there are many factors that can affect the manifestation of biological effects of synthetic surfactants in more complex systems.
